The loss we needed - glad we didn’t pinch this win.

..... Even from the first bounce, it just looked like we thought we would win, and played accordingly...

Spot on. That's what was so disappointing. It was obvious very early in the game, even when we were well ahead. Up to that point our attitude in the H&A and pre-season was great. Even Matty Lloyd mentioned that he thought the Dons just wanted the ball more on the night. And they did. Hard to know why we were flat. There were a few exceptions, but most seemed to lack that frantic attack on the footy that they had in previous games. Hopefully we can rekindle that desire this week. Think we will. :)

In my mind, it all started at half time LAST week, we really should have gone on to beat Brisbane by 50-70 points, but dropped off and only won by 19, if only our last 6 quaters were as good as our first 6 this year, we'd be on top with a better percentage than St.K! I will only slightly start to accept this loss if we go on and break our biggest hoodoo this week (Sydney in Sydney - 16 years and counting)

There was also the loss of Jamo 10 mins before halftime last week to contend with and recover from.

I knew we were going to lose this game in the first quarter even when we were 25 points up. Reason – no intensity at contests, and disinterested tackling. Blues players often had their back to the play, and were making half efforts to man up or chase their opponents. Essendon were getting killed on the scoreboard, but they were giving 100% at every contest, and it was inevitable that they would be rewarded, and they were. Even though we only lost by a kick, I’m glad we didn’t win this one because otherwise the lesson would not have hit home. The lesson – 100% intensity is required every minute of every game, regardless of the quality of the opposition. Essendon might have an ordinary list, but they taught us that there is no substitute for wanting the ball more. :)

HAHAHAHAHA, omg this is gold:thumbsu: After all the arrogant talking you did last week, you were wrong, even with all the injuries at Essendon.

Please note, I'm not criticising Carlton, just Parrot, which I'm sure you can all appreciate.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and we also apparantely have "The worst AFL coaching appointment since Danny Frawley" http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?p=14143144#post14143144

It is a long season. Who knows what will happen to the players from week to week? What we need more than loses is wins in every round.

Much like looking back at a bunch of Fev's behinds from the game, just wishing even one had been a goal, will we look back to this round in September and say "if only we had got those four points"?

I think, if the players had to learn a lesson, it'd have been better to have been thrashed by Geelong or Hawthorn or a team we weren't expected to beat. In that case, they would have been four points we would have been hard pressed to earn in the first place (I realise that being beaten by a quality side is a different lesson than being beaten by a poorer side).

We needed a scare (like a four point win), not a lesson.

I don't accept this. We need all the wins we can get. I don't want to look back and say, "If Only" at the end of the year.

I hate losing to Essendon. I hate it that every year we play Matthew Lloyd back into form. Last year he was under the same pressure and sure enough pulled one out just like Saturday night.

I knew we were in trouble when Fev kicked his first goal and rubbed in belly and head in a personal message to a mate......Pleeeeeeease give me a break Fev.

I love Fev in our team, but to think of doing that rather than thanking your team mates who delivered the ball to you in the first place really pissed me off. I think this just showed that we were starting to get ahead of ourselves and were not quite switched on.

Also, the two goal turnaround killed us. Twice in two weeks by Thornton. Surely Ratts has to pull him and Waite into line about indisciplined acts. Sucked in again boys.

I know they will bounce back but I still Hate Losing To Essendon:(

Perfect Parrot. Couldn't agree more with what you have said above. Was saying the same things through the first quarter to the people I was with at the game. Felt that Fev especially in the first quarter was not in nthe zone and that his attitude affected the team greatly.

We lost this game partly at the selection table. We knew that for Essendon to win then Lloyd and or Lucas would have to fire and thats exactly what happened. So with Jamo injured and a tall short in defence what do we do ! Pick a small to replace him ??????

Secondly why the hell was Scotland dropped ???? He's one of our best ball users !

Seems to me that we got ahead of ourselves, and didn't give the Dons the respect they deserve.
Essendon always lift when playing carlton, and we got caught.

Here's hoping the guys learn from it, and realise that every win is earned

I agree Mr. X. We got way ahead of ourselves and fell into the trap of believing the hype. I was actually at the game and afterwards felt quite at ease with the loss. The hardest pill to swallow was acknowledging how poorly we played - the consolation was that we actually lost and had to face how woeful we were. If we'd snuck out of that with a win, our players, particularly the younger ones, potentially wouldn't have learned their lesson. Obviously the ideal outcome would've been a convincing win, but I would rather a loss that highlights exactly where we are, what we aren't doing and what we need to do, than an iffy win that glosses over the obvious fact that, despite the result, we were no good.
