Wow, I would have Taberner so far ahead of Waterman. Not even really worth doing a player comparison - I know what would come up.

The one thing I'll give you is that Tabs is injury prone. He's also been one of the best contested marks in the AFL for a few years. I think he would have challenged for the Coleman this year had he stayed on the park.

On Pixel 4a using BigFooty.com mobile app

Tabs has been on the list for nearly ten years. Has he ever really challenged for the Coleman.
Tabs is an honest to good forward but he is miles of the Kennedy, Lynch , Reiwalt class.

He’s kicked one bag of 5 in his entire career. He’s not challenging for the Coleman with big bags of 2.

1 bag of 5 in 10 years,
Geez for a key forward that is a damning stat.
He only just played 100 games.

We've gotten value on the pick we took him with, pretty much exactly what we could hope for from a rookie tall forward.

Great forTabs to have a 10 year career of nearly getting the job done.
Average of 10 games a year and minimum goals tells me he has managed to get games through the clubs incompetence that there was no one better.
Its not Tabs fault that he keeps getting picked.
In his 10 years on the list has he ever grabbed a game by the scruff of its neck and dragged the club over the line.

Right, and we picked him in the rookie draft.
He's played just 26 games more than Andrew Brayshaw.

If only we had his work rate out of the half dozen younger, higher rated, talls we drafted since he was taken.

The issue is he's going to have to lead the forward line for at least the next 2-3 season until a young drafted forward is ready. He's a terrible number one forward.

In ten years he has played 26 more games than Brayshaw?
Doesn't that tell you something, work rate is great but without talent the end product is Tabs.
Work rate and talent produces Pavlich ,Kennedy or any one of the other great forwards.

Durability is arguably the most important skill in the game

Durability isn't the only reason Tabs has played so few league games.
He played seasons at Peel un injured.
If durability was the key to playing great football and not skill the lists would be full of plodders who avoided injury.

Which would be indicative of their respective draft positions. Are you surprised that a first round national draft pick is better quality than someone picked off the rookie draft?
Like I said, Tabs was 5th in the Coleman last year missing many games, very similar to this year. So 12 or 13 clubs have been getting less from their key forwards with much better delivery from their mids. Tabs was only ever going to be serviceable.

Even the great Pav kicked totals of 21, 25, 31, 40 and 46 in 5 of his last 6 seasons. The 21 goals was when he played only a dozen or so games that season (much like Taberner plays each year). Pav was a first round draft pick and superstar. Don't be so harsh.

No one is being harsh.
He's a serviceable player that has made the most of himself and does a good job in a difficult position.
He's a hard worker with strong athletic attributes but without much football intelligence.
These are reasonable and fair assessments of him.
That he is our number 1 key forward is an indictment of our recruiting, not Taberner.

We agree on Tabs with being only serviceable but being on a list for 10 years and only being in that category isnt ideal . Can you name a game that Tabs has dominated and dragged us over the line? The forward line has been dysfunctional for a lot of seasons and Tabs has been the dominant part.
Its a slight on the club for relying on a rookie pick to carry the load .
The club has had the opportunity to draft talented bigs but continued down the mid and flanker path. Its not Tabs fault, he doesn't select himself.

Agree 100% with that.

the amount of times he is targeted for I50 would be amongst the highest in the league, so his return on I50 would be really low. The goal stat is misleading when he is getting so much supply.

Well he's been the most consistent part and therefore most the relied upon I guess. Not sure he was ever meant to be though. Sure Hogan, McDardy, Lobb, Dixon, Kersten, Apeness were probably meant to help out to some extent. Nothing out of them. Crap. As have been our other forwards like Matera, SY, Bennell, Walters recently, Crowden. Not much forward line support since Ballantyne, Mayne etc finished up. Even Freddie was kicking like shit this year, Henry doesn't contest half the time, Shultz, Colyer, Switta, Sturt all inconsistent or injured.

Pav would us strength to get separation.

A push off, get space, run a figure 8 lead.
Taberner stands still, or grabs the defenders jumper and holds him close.
How does that get you space to mark the ball?

exactly. Best example would be the 2012 elimination final. Pav would wrestle, shove off his opponent and take a chest mark because he had raw strength.

Tabs spent most of the game trying to wrestle Andrews who is as strong as an ox (and able to infringe with impunity). I'm not sure i saw him lead the whole game.
