City decided themselves to punish the active fans

MELBOURNE CITY ACTIVE FANS UNABLE TO ATTEND NEXT TWO HOME MATCHDAYS

Melbourne City’s active supporters will be unable to attend games for the next A-Leagues matchdays at AAMI Park, the club announced.

City have introduced the measures in response to Football Australia’s initial findings regarding the December 17 Melbourne Derby, which was abandoned after Melbourne Victory supporters stormed the AAMI Park pitch.

The Round 8 clash saw City goalkeeper Tom Glover struck by a supporter, while referee Alex King found himself engulfed by fans. Life-time bans and various suspensions have been issued to supporters, while criminal charges have been laid against some.

After Victory were issued with a “show cause” notice, and as FA’s investigation continues, no tickets will be sold for Victory home games, effective immediately and until January 15, 2023 – only valid club members can attend the home fixtures during the period before the show cause is determined.

Now, City have closed off the City Terrace active supporter area for Tuesday’s A-Leagues doubleheader featuring Central Coast Mariners in the Isuzu UTE A-League and Perth Glory in the Liberty A-League.
The January 7 Isuzu UTE A-League showdown between City and reigning champions Western United will also adopt the same measures, which include:

  • The City Terrace active supporter area to be closed to all fans
  • All existing casual tickets into the City Terrace to be refunded
  • All casual ticket sales into the City Terrace to be suspended
  • All General Admission members required to redeem complimentary reserved seat
  • First three rows behind goals to be closed
“Melbourne City active members will be unable to attend the next two Melbourne City home A-Leagues matchday,” the club said in a statement.

“Whilst only committed by a small minority within our active supporter group, the use of flares poses a significant risk to the safety of our players, staff, and to the general public.

“Authorities have successfully identified and banned one Melbourne City active member responsible for the use of flares, however as authorities are in the process of identifying the remaining culprits, we have no other choice than to impose these restrictions on active support.

“Melbourne City is a family club, and we pride ourselves on creating a fun, safe and inclusive environment.

“We take a zero-tolerance approach to the use of flares at our matches which is why we have decided to take this action.”

Unfortunately these sanctions miss the mark and create more angst amongst the innocent.

Meh look the flares on the ground and stuff was stupid. No need for it at all. We already aren't allowed active support for the next two. Also the active support was supposedly boycotting the season.

Probably a bit of a tactical move with the investigation ongoing. Also to be honest you need to stop the behaviour early or it gets ingrained like the OSM and Victory.

Next time some dickhead pulls out a flare hopefully the rest of active will either put them in their place or help the club call them out.

I am over the flares and would not want to see what happened on Cities side happen again in another game.

Where are our 3 points from the match we were winning before the Victory dropkicks caused it to be abandonned?

I am hoping that will be part of the "sanctions" being dropped on the 15th of Jan. You would have to give us the 3 points. Dangerous precedent to give the team that stormed the pitch a point after going a goal down...

Also any word about refunding the tickets from the game? Haven't heard a peep about any plans for that

Yeah likewise. People that saw 20 minutes of football that did FA getting punished as well.

Well this is fun, would love another one before half time to absolutely put the nail in the coffin, but as long as we don't concede, I am happy. Been a decent set of results for us so far (lol Vuck)

McLaren looks like he will never stop scoring in consecutive games, Tilly is a stud.

Don't think Tilio will be with us much longer (he will go on to a bigger and better league for his development as a player and Socceroo)

What a signing he has been for us though

Tilio has another year to run on his contract after this season.

Wouldn't be surprised if he gets signed by Man City then loaned out, like they did with Mooy.

It's good to see him keeping a Nabbout on the pine on performances, it means he's taken the next step in his development.

The bench tonight was pretty loaded. Berenguer Nabbout Reis Jamo and Galloway. Throw in Golmulka, that's a spine of a team good enough to be top 4 at the moment.

Football Australia going soft on Victory. No reason why the game should be restarted and no reason why Victory should not have lost all its points accrued so far this season. Should have been a 3-0 victory to City, like it would have been in any other league. But the administrators in this country are spineless and incompetent so it does not surprise me.

Don't think they went soft at all.

Sure City should have got the win but think it's standard to be replayed.

game was stopped because of the out of control MV idiot fringe supporters- it should not be replayed- MV has had ample time to get this sorted

Sure but them the rules.

Seem examples of both (replayed or walkover). But can't say I've seen a game resumed at 1-0....

Yes that is weird. Not like it'll be the same players.

Sure but them the rules.
You have seen the rules for what goes on after a player has been king-hit by a crazy opposition supporter?
Why has it taken until today for this rule to be declared?
I suggest there has been no precedent, no rule, and it's on the job learning for these clowns.

Every league has rules about matches being called off due to weather or crowd behaviour etc etc.

Just also read that the Asian Champions League isn't happening this year in Feb, as they're moving it inline with European Champions League calendar (group phase is Oct/Nov and knockout in Feb onwards).

This means we won't have tied fixture congestion (which cost us towards the end of last season), but they haven't worked out who will be or sole qualifier for the 23/24 edition.

Wasn't the game stopped after our fans threw flares on the ground? Either way I reckon the fact our end was also throwing things onto the pitch may have been one of the reasons behind the decision to replay.

Also city may not want to have to refund tickets to the biggest game of the year and would prefer to replay it purely for financial reasons.

So will victory have to use a sub for Nani? Such a weird situation.
