Obviously not an original GIF but beautifully placed. Kudos LtK.

243 games for North and him leaving at the peak of Norths eventual slump leading into a total overhaul to play practically nil for Collingwood and North fans are preferring to leave Wellsy in no man's land of their good graces.

Some entitlement. Any club is lucky to have one club players. Let alone a highly skilled player like him play over 200 games.

He's a North legend, and fans need to come to terms with that and let the club switch aspect go, he's retired now. The records speak for themselves.

Yeah that's right.

We let him go so he could top up his super when his career was over. He shouldn' have played another game, he was cooked, but instead he got enough money to help ensure his future and he got it out of Collingwood.

Win win.

At the time he left I thought he had one good year left and it would be fine to give him two to match, but 3 was a bad deal. Turns out I was probably right. He had some excellent games once he got on the park in year 1, and naff-all in years 2 and 3. The way that all played out still bums me out a little, and it's a shame I couldn't bring myself to enjoy anything he did at Collingwood. Head says don't begrudge him (or any player really) a payday, heart says meh.

Well said, that's about what I feel. Really loved Wellsy the North player but felt let down by him at the end - not just the leaving, but in the season up until then also.

He enjoyed good tenure at North while we supported him on and off-field with a tricky balance of elite output when on the park vs fairly low availability (and sometimes questionable conditioning).

Not our fault (despite claims to the contrary) he couldn't balance his own books. I'll judge him against reality - a looked after North Melbourne player who ran off for more coin when we hit a snag.

I don't think it's on Wells that he couldn't get on the park. I'm close with a medical professional who performed numerous scans on players including him and in their words his feet had the structure of an arthritic 70 year old. We did the right thing letting him follow more coin elsewhere.

We didn't though, we offered him 2 years.

I think we offered what we thought he was worth to us, and what we could get out of him. We could have given more if we wanted to retain but I'm guessing the risk vs reward would have been not in our favor

Got you now, you meant the right thing by us. Thought you were suggesting we allowed him free passage to Collingwood in some sort of touching magnanimous gesture.

His career average is 9.6 touches. 😱

Still, it was very touching how John Longmire reached deep into Gary's subconscious and determined that he was homesick so traded him out for humanitarian reasons. Before Gary even recognised his homesickness himself. Was like watching Inception.

I'm of the opinion that had Wells stayed he'd have played more footy than he did at the pies.

Wouldn't have come back in such poor shape in the first year.

Probably made zero difference to any result for North. We weren't making finals with Wells, and we didn't make finals without him.

I think by all accounts he was cooked and it was better that Collingwood paid his pension than North. Even if that was more due to good luck than good management.

I think when the others went he had to go too. Realistically. Even keeping him for two years would have been a bad idea imo. On reflection and with hindsight.
