Ex-Demon among new arrivals as Roos bolster VFL list for 2024

North Melbourne has bolstered its VFL side with four new signings

North Melbourne has bolstered its VFL side with four new signings ahead of the 2024 season, while re-signing a raft of existing players to fresh contracts.

Former Casey utility Deakyn Smith heads a quartet of arrivals as the Roos target further improvement following their wildcard round exit to the Demons in the 2023 season.

Smith joins the Kangaroos for the 2024 campaign along with young Dandenong Stingrays midfielder/forward Kade De La Rue, Sandringham Dragons forward Charlie Harrop and Mooroopna defender Coby James.

Fearless skipper and 2023 best and fairest winner Jack Watkins led the series of re-signings announced on the club's @nmfcreserves social accounts during December.

Former Hawk outside midfielder Connor Downie was next to be announced, followed by leading goalkicker Sam Lowson, who averaged two goals per game for the Roos in 2023.

Former Bulldog Louis Butler was rewarded for the dash he provides the club as a rebounding defender and his hard work at the contest.

The Kangaroos' Best Clubman for 2023, Ben Davis, also signed on next for another season under his one-time teammate at Adelaide, Tom Lynch, who leads the Roos as VFL senior coach.

Rounding out the re-signings were best and fairest runner-up Tyler Sellers, reliable forward Jamie Hope and young gun Tom Cappellari.
Didn’t harrop kick a mini bag in one of the u18 rep games

VFL list is shaping up.

All key contributors from last year looked to have signed on and we have added Dekyn Smith and Kade De La Rue. Looked to have only lost Nick Stevens and Cooper Keogh. Haven’t heard if we have retained Ben Bath or Hamish Murphy. Club is unsure

We also have Ben Hopkins, Cooper Trembath and Daniel Pinter training with the VFL side (and the AFL side at times) too.
still no word on ben bath or hamish murphy?

See we picked up Coby James in the reserves, if it is the same boy that played with the Murry Bushrangers, that is a good get. A small defender around the 180 cm mark, not flashy but gets the job done. Was a little surprised he didn't get picked up in the National Draft or even rookied, but I understand why, a very small defender probably not at the top of teams needs, reminded me of a similar player a couple of years ago Jed Hagan from W.A., he didn't get picked up either and is playing with Port Adelaide.

If I remember correctly Jed had a huge wrap on him as a 14/15/16 year old and was considered a first or second round draft pick at the time. With some of our other pick ups, I would not be surprised if our reserves team finishes in the top 4 next year. The guys that played last year also signing on is a big tick to our football department, think I might of said it a few times already, but can't stress enough, the importance of a good reserves team and the fact that winning builds confidence no matter what level you play at.

Bath was definitely involved in the match sim today. Heard Tom Lynch call out to him a few times. Might be an indication he’s sticking around.

I still think a player like Trent Bianco Ex Collingwood would be handy thought a bit stiff to be delisted and I see the VFL draw dates for 2024 is out how byes that the NMFC will cop for the year in a row and how many AFL/VFL will clash against each other .Love to have at least 3 or 4 stand alone games against either a Collingwood Essendon or Richmond at Arden Street promote it right and get some sort of crowd not away games against these clubs that we seem to cop every year.
Plus this is wishful thinking play Carlton at Marvel before the AFL game on Good Friday to get the crowd in early before the big game and raise even more $$$$ for RCH instead of late rush of people rolling up 10 minutes before the game as the VFL was played at another ground before the main game.

Few vfl lads involved at training today.

Downie: stiff to not be on a afl list, up with the best of the main list in the running drills. And would be in the top handful of kickers if he was on the list.

Deakyn Smith: first time seeing him at training, looked really lively. Used the ball really well.

Lowson: ball use was messy, but completed a lot of the running drills.

Had to google these next 2.

Ben Hopkins: very lightly built, nice kick. Didn’t finish the session, had to be walked off by a doc as he was cooked after a running drill.

Cooper Trembath: solidly built lad. Some drills watch from the outside and subbed in if someone needed a spell. Done some one on one stuff with afl listed players and was fairly strong in the contest.

I still haven’t heard where Bianco is playing this year. Honestly surprised he wasn’t a train-on player somewhere.

The VFL scheduling is a joke. I like all your suggestions but it’s rare for the VFL/AFL games to align all that well.

I reckon Downie would have ended up on the list if we didn’t get Stephens.

Notice Sellers at all? Thanks for the info!

I regularly talked him up pre-msd last year and his class stands out at vfl level. He was used fairly poorly at times though, which affected his disposal numbers. He was often left as our deeper small defender and he struggled to accumulate there. He also played inside mid at times, which he seemed to be ill-suited to. His better games were when he played pure wing. For example, he would often get 20-25 disposals one week and then get 10-14 the next.

A bit like goater, he seems better suited to wing, but was forced to play other roles out of necessity, or to accommodate afl players.

No Sellers. Was another bloke out there with short blonde hair, might have been Louis Butler if he’s had a trim didn’t get a good look at his face.

Be handy to keep Lienert on the list as well. Coaching will be his primary role, but he can pull on the boots again if we're short on talls.

Based on my 22 for round one, I'd have most of Duursma, George, Hardeman, Powell, Bergman, Goater, Lazzaro, Archer, Harvey, Drury, W. Dawson, Goad, Maley, RHJ, Nyuon, and Comben starting in the VFL.

I'm sure we'll pick up some injuries in the next couple of months, but that's looking like a seriously talented group of young players developing together. Our lack of depth has made our VFL side somewhat depressing at times in recent years, but it's looking like appointment viewing this year.

Overall no real difference in talent to the squad from a vfl perspective and minimal movement focussed on retention it seems

We lost keogh and stevens

Gained deakyn smith and a bunch of tac cup boys

Our afl list is stronger tho
Only things that will continue to help the VFL side of things will be
1:No major injuries to the AFL side of things.
2: A good draw that doesn’t clash with the AFL games EG:A Saturday AFL with a Sunday VFL game hopefully at Arden St and the same with a VFL game Saturday and AFL game Sunday game against strong AFL supported clubs at Arden St so the club can make some $$$ from catering and merchandise.
3: Seeing players like Sellers continuing to develop with new players and older players being the core of the VFL side this year.
4: Make Finals again with a stronger side then the one against when we played Casey.
5: A one off game against Carlton at Marvel on Good Friday to get the crowd in early to raise more $$$$$ for Children’s Hospital plus it will give a tremendous opportunity for young players to get the feel of big game atmosphere with a big crowd that may not get that chance down the track playing in front of a couple hundred people.

Round 1 VFL

B: Archer, W.Dawson, Bergman
HB: Hardeman, Pink, Nyuon
C: Drury, Greenwood, Lazzaro
HF: Taylor, Sellars, George
F: Hansen Jnr, Maley, Harvey
Foll: Free, Watkins, Shiels
Int: Goad, Downie, Smith, Lowson

Depth: Davis, De La Rue, Butler, Hope, Cappellari, Charlie Harrop, Coby James, Nick Newton…and whoever else we sign to the VFL side.
