I'm also not sure how the nickname for the train became the nickname for the man
I am not even sure how the Doritos thing really took off, I think it was initially just a delicious treat for us to enjoy while watching the great man

Jack Steven apparently left the scene of a car accident and refused a drug test near Lorne :(

This is an interesting, though not overly intuitive, visual from AFL.com.au. What it is saying is we are ranked:

- 4th for 1st quarter wins
- 15th for 2nd quarter wins
- 2nd for 3rd quarter wins
- 7th for 4th quarter wins

Unsurprisingly, Sydney are 11th for 1st quarters, but 1st or 2nd for the rest. Looks like Brisbane's 2nd halves have cost them, and the Dees 1st halves.

Data seems to line up with the "feeling" watching the games - we're a pretty solid team for most of the game, but have a 15-20 minute period that's so bad we can basically lose the game in that time.

I have work to do, so obviously I decided to take a look at our second quarters:

Saints - 4.4 (us) vs 3.1 (them). One of our rare 2nd quarter wins.

Adelaide - 1.2 vs 2.3. Not a bad loss but watching it, Crows felt like they were on top but couldn't convert.

Hawthorn - 1.1. vs 5.2. Had control in the first quarter then lost the plot in the second.

Bulldogs - 4.3 vs 4.2. All square in the second quarter this time.

Kangas - 7.4 vs 1.2. Can't really take much from this.

Lions - 2.3 vs 1.3. Another one hard to take much from with the conditions.

Blues - 5.2 vs 4.1. A narrow win to us but built on a solid first quarter lead.

So 7 straight wins and we win 5 second quarters (with the only really bad quarter against the Hawks), then...

Dees - 0.4 vs 0.5. Hardly a loss - it was fascinating to watch both teams screw up chance after chance! (Lost this one in the last - 3.2 vs 5.0)

Port - 2.3 vs 4.3. Not a shellacking, but if we'd been able to break even (even after that dire 8 goals to 3 first quarter) we would've won

Suns - 1.2 vs 7.2. Third quarter was even worse (8 goals to 2) but we basically lost the match in the 2nd quarter.

Giants - 1.2 vs 6.5. Pretty much as per Suns - game lost with this 2nd quarter effort.

Tigers - 3.1 vs 3.4. Almost broke even (against the 17th team) but the Tigers missed some very gettable chances.

Swans - 1.3 vs 5.3. All of our first quarter advantage wiped out in 10 minutes (according to afltables.com, Amartey kicked their first at 14m 19s, Heeney kicked their 5th at 23m 49s)

Haven't one a single 2nd quarter since our 7-game start.

Maybe it's a little over-dramatic, but it's not crazy to say that we let slip 3 games to 2nd quarters (Swans, Giants, Port). It's so weird that we're the 2nd best third quarter team - like we mentally ease up in the second, get the half-time talk, then come out like a house on fire.

Re this last line, CS always talks about the natural ebbs and flows of the game, and recently he’s spoken about knowing that the flow of the game will go against us at some point, and just trying to limit the damage in those periods.

I totally agree with the ebbs and flows, but when the tide goes against us, too often we get totally swept away. Hopefully they have a (better) plan coming into the second half of the season.

Great research, Blinky. And some very worrying stats, no doubt.

The other point that is noticeable is that we basically haven't had a second quarter all season that's been a major contributor to a win. Even in a number of our victories, they've been marginal moments, at best.

I used to have a regular sense of anxiety about how we would start games. When we got jumped early, we would often really struggle to get back into those matches. It almost now seems that they've developed a pattern of starting O.K. and getting to the first break (mostly) in reasonable shape, before being regularly pumped in the second stanza. So it would be really great to see the team not drop their bundle when returning from the first change in the coming games.

100%. Even break-even second quarters would be enough to give us a big edge going into second halves, where we've generally out-performed other teams.
