The main reasons Suns and Giants are in is related to broadcast contracts. Membership numbers would be a much lower priority.
Forget the whole 'these two groups of people won't go for Brisbane/Sydney' debate, I still don't think they both should have come in at the same time.

I actually think that they afl got a lot of things right if you are going to try and test tube create a team but I agree going for 2 new babies was silly.

Ummmmm.... the club names? The colours? Still trying to think of a possible third thing... Any hints?

Their recruitment strategy was pretty bang on.

Taking the best 21-22 year olds available via their concessions, then picking the eyes out-of-the draft have left them in a position where anything less than a top 10 draft pick is useless to them.

They were lucky that they got to see how GCS went before making their decisions.

It was part of the reason they could afford to plunder all the KPF stocks and not worry about an excess of players in that position.

I know that the clubs got huge recruitment concessions but they need to be fast tracked to become successful. I also think that the academies are a good concept for them.

I think that is what annoys me the most about the McCarthy situation. When they drafted him they absolutely no need for him but the surplus of picks they had meant they could afford to take him and just stick him in the 2's. There was even talk that they took kids like McCarthy knowing they wouldn't play for GWS but to use as bait to get more picks from clubs like us. Then when we got his chance due to Boyd leaving and the other big kid going down they realised what a gun they had on their hands and just decided to keep him. Which is all entirely within their rights but they shouldn't have had so many high picks for so many years and hence the opportunity to stockpile players like that.

Humbly disagree with this. We got squat when we entered the AFL and we have battled as a club ever since. The AFL were happy to take our money and let us flounder. On balance, our administration and coaching staff made a whole series of blunders and stuff ups over the years but we were never given the advantages GWS and GC received.
They can shove their "academies" as far as I'm concerned.

We were in a football market, the main task was attracting those already following AFL to supporting Freo, not to bring them into the game as GWS and GCS are tasked with.

It was a mistake how Fremantle was included and doing it twice more would have meant not learning from it.

The only reason we were allowed entry was to hinder the Scum Buckets premiership chances.

Lucky we had a half decent WAFL and a couple of boys who came home. At least we were competitive and not a joke like these two plastic franchises from the land of the bum sniffers.

I don’t actually see anything in this statement that disagrees with my statement. What they got as concessions compared to what we got almost 20 years before are different conversations. And the concessions we had would have doomed the 2 new clubs from the outset.

why doomed? the two new clubs have built weird cultural foundations around tanking and handouts. I think in the long term it maybe more damaging than our early passionate, naive battler but ultimately inadequate roots.

They have been built to be successful in as short a time frame as possible because non traditional football followers won't persist with an unsuccessful team.

They were given access to high profile players such as Ablett as well as stars from other codes to specifically create an instant profile.

They have been empowered to recruit local young players via academies.

We weren't given the same level of support because our supporters were hardened football, parochial addicts. And most importantly our state already had a large number of fans watching TV broadcast football.

Really different scenarios.

I've heard a lot of word that McCarthy really likes to "enjoy" himself on nights out, especially while he was in Perth over Christmas. While originally disappointed I really think we have dodged a massive bullet.

I too hate people who enjoy nights out. As a 20-21 year old earning over 100k a year he should be staying at home sipping cups of tea and knitting.

Better than getting up to illegal activities.
