Wellingham a dud? lol
he reminds me of des headland. headland looked good at brisbane with voss, lappin, black and akermanis helping him. he came to freo and never was a damaging player here.

wellingham looked good at collingwood with swan, pendlebury, thomas, beams and sidebottom. went to west coast and hasnt been as good.

Almost!?!?

From where he's going to be coming from, he wont be a lock in. Especially if Yarran and Bennell get fit (Bennell is a big question mark too I know). As the post you're responding to said, he needs to have a very good pre-season because he's going to be coming from a fair way back as a fitness base. I know he's in training of sorts, but it's nothing like the rigour of a full on AFL program.

Basically this. I reckon he'll have a fair amount of ground to cover. I know it's completely different context but Nathan Ablett reckons he took basically half the season after the pre-season to get his head around the speed and game patterns etc. It's essentially like his first year again. However he definitely has the drive to make it.

The problem I see is Cam isn't a first forward. If you watch his games he did well as the second/third tall. We still need that focal point, strong marking power forward. Apeness could do it but he's still got a long way to go. Tabs is probably better off playing the roaming CHF role. Hogan is a pipe dream at this point. If we get Cam (assuming Pav retires) and Apeness doesn't come on then we'll me in more trouble then we are now with our forward issues.

Next year it could look like
HF: Crozier Tabs Walters
FF: McCarthy Ape Ballas

That's not the most potent, high marking forward line we need. Part of the reason we are getting defeated so often is because they just waltz it out of the backline because we don't have the forwards clunking marks. Cam will be an upgrade on Mayne, but we still need a replacement on Pav, and for all Cams worth, he isn't the Pav replacement.

He also looked really good last year so your point is somewhat redundant.

Wellingham is a spud West Coast overpaid for. Headland was a spud that became serviceable for Fremantle who overpaid for him.

McCarthy can be a gun or a bust. Don't think there will be much in between. He won't end up a Jesse White, he'll either be a gun or be de-listed in 3 years.

Apeness will be our gun full forward allowing Tabs and McCarthy to be roaming forwards.

As much as it sucks losing this year, it's great seeing some potential coming to the club.

If hawthorn can change game plan with the lost of roughead and hale in the forward line . Why can't we?

You obviously don't watch them much.

He was sensational for them last year and when his body has been right this year he has been pretty good too.

Surely a professional athlete in his 20's would see this year as a massive opportunity to hit the gym, do plenty of running, and treat it as a 6 month pre-season?

Regardless of which club McCarthy's at next year his skin folds and time trials should be elite at the start of pre-season.

Unbelievable! Surely keeping him as a runner would help his development as a future AFL player etc

AFL are morons

Probably the usual what if he got injured argument and who would be liable. Yes unhelpful for McCarthy but probably predictable in our insurance/legal mad world - no one is going to take a risk.

Because they have a lot more inside 50 entries then us. And a lot more skills. We constantly bomb it long. Have done for the past few seasons however because of our pressure we've been able to keep it in. This year we've been found out, plus our skills (for whatever reason) have gone down drastically. Hawks can cover Roughy and Hale because they still have Gunston/Bruest etc marking lace out kicks that not many defenders can get too. Plus their mids kick a few.

If we can get our skills right then sure, it'll be doable but would rather have someone with a real marking presence down there for when we revert to bombing it long.

I don't have hard stats on hand for this but I expect their scoring chains start about twice as far back as ours on average, so the field is more spread and their forwards get more of a chance.

Agree that we need to keep looking for a gun KPF but reckon that forward line for next year definitely looks better than this year. As great as Pav has been hes only averaging 12 disposals and 1.2 goals a game this year. Can't see any reason why Apeness can't match or better that if he gets on the park and a fit and firing McCarthy is leagues above what we currently have with Mayne.

Not even close.

I have watched them enough to be able to pass judgement and West Coast paid way too much for him, the same we did for Headland considering the output we got.
