Been 3 or 4 years since I have set foot on hollowed ground. Was good for my soul. Good food, good company and good conversation helps also :)

Like a lot of you, I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to eat at many a location over the world. The clubs food, prices and service quality didn't give me any reason to complain. As REH said. everyone seemed pretty happy.
There is always room for improvement. Once you stop expecting that the competition will leave you for dead.

Decent schnitties and fish'n'chips are baseline pub fare and the minimum expectation of any pub or social club that serves food.

The Steakhouse, in its pomp, was seriously good and we'd all like that level of quality/options back.

It's time the Port Club bistro followed what the Prince (POW) has been doing right for years. Great salad bar with a simple but well spread side dishes and good old pub meals. This American crap the Port Club is trying to do just doesn't work. We're on many occasions have given them ideas and they say they'll try them, but hardly ever take it any further. Also, there are way too many steak dishes. It's time the PCB listened to it's customer once in a while. You know the old saying - The customer is always right... well most times they are.

Yeah, American stuff just doesn't work in Adelaide.

For example; The Curious Squire, Bennys Diner, Jack Rubys, Chuck Wagon, American Cupcake Diner, Gilbert St Hotel, Low and Slow etc are all struggling immensely where as the Bay Motel Hotel which is serving up the same meals it did 40 years ago is the 'go to' venue.

But in all seriousness,

American Food is the 'in' thing at the moment and we could do worse than to get in touch with one of The Curious Squire, Jack Rubs, Chuck Wagon or Low and Slow to see if we can collaborate with them with a menu refresh.

All four of the above venues are close to Adelaide Oval (or the Port) and could quiet easily become the go-to pub for Port supporters prior to a game if promoted as such.

The American Steakhouse Port diner was superb, the steaks were incredibly quality for a football club and would compare to most steak places in town.

I think the comment was about the new hotdogs with lots of cheese and "stuff" in it. What do the places you mentioned do? Burgers?

Actually if we are talking about straight pub grub over a few beers, can't do any better than US pub grub and suicide hot Buffalo Chicken wings. Was talking about them over lunch at the Port Club with proman_x on Wednesday. I mentioned to him I went to the original pub in Buffalo in upstate New York, meet the original inventor and his son was still running the pub at the time around 20 years ago.

The gourmet burger/fast food has taken off like a bat out of hell. It's been such a success that McDonald's now has a make your own gourmet burger stands in their restaurants.

In the US, there is a very strong demand for more premium fast foods that are cheap. Hence the explosion of gourmet food vans and trucks that have now become a global phenomenon.

Hard to find decent authentic Buffalo wings in Adelaide, too. Chuck Wagon do them well although they're usually over-breaded. Squire's so-called don't resemble Buffalo wings in any fashion (though they may have changed since I was last there, quite a while back), American Cupcake diner's are decent but you have to go to bloody Norwood. Haven't tried Gilbert St. Hotel's.

They are addictive damn things and I'd go to the Port Club twice as often if we did them and did them well.

Steakhouse actually became a destination eaterie for awhile there, where previously it was "let's all meet up and put some money into the club at the same time".

Doesn't matter what style of food it is, it just has to be done well. There are too many options out there these days, too many pubs that do great food that you just can't afford to put out sub-standard stuff.

I know the club not that long ago were advertising for a number of key positions in the restaurant. Maybe they lost a number of key employees and havent been able to replace them with people of the same quality.

I have a Benny's just down the road from my house and I'm in there at least once a fortnight. Great food and atmosphere.

Burgers, Wings, Hot Dogs (with lots of cheese and stuff), Pulled Meats, Ribs, Fries, Shakes, Sodas etc.

Basically, the stuff that sells and creates a destination venue.

The Curious Squire is literally a venue I go to at least twice a month just because of their wings, same with the Gilbert St.

It's not to say you can't have traditional pub fare also, but unless it's done incredibly, incredibly well - it just won't cut it in this day and age.

Ok if the Curious Squire do good wings then I have to check it out. :thumbsu: And the Gilbert St Hotel by the sounds of things.

And yeah traditional pub fare has to be done well these days, but the Stag probably went over the top with their huge 300gm and 500gm+ steaks and they were a bit pricey.

I'd also give big ups to Bread & Bone Wood Grill in Peel St

Ok that rang a bell - Dave Banner before he went away told me their head chef left and another chef left as well and the guy they asked to step up couldnt handle it so they were going to advertise.

Will try out the first couple of places as well as the two TSW mentioned.

Bloody oath chicken wings are addictive. The first time my mate in Calgary introduced me to "suicide hot" wings that the pub he took me to, was renowned for them, we both had somewhere around 40 or 50 over a 5 hour session at the pub. It was summertime in Calgary and the sun sets around midnight it was a long afternoon/evening session of beers and eating in their outdoor beer garden.

The Squires wings aren't authentic Buffalo tasting but their buffalo is delicious none the less. I reckon the most authentic buffalo taste I've experienced in Adelaide is the Gilbert Street Hotel.

I only hear good things but am yet to 'dulge.
Nice and close to Adelaide Oval.

Maybe check it out by the end of the season.

Burgers are the big one at the moment.

Getting 3 or 4 sexy variations on the menu would be a good place to start. You need a solid double cheeseburger, a combination burger and something spicy topped with sliced chilli-cheese kransky, jalapeños and dijon mustard.

Damn I'm hungry now.

Slightly off topic but I just want to say that so far I haven't had a single burger in Melbourne that comes close to being as good as Burger Theory.
