The race for top 4

Tigers to destroy Port in the grand final. Port easy run home and on their day are the best of a pretty average bunch. They'll finish top 2, get 2 finals at AO before getting Mauled by Richmond at the G. Then it's curtains for 2018 and the start of a new era.

Have you looked at the fixture?

Our run home is Adelaide (Ladder positions count for nothing in these games), West Coast, Collingwood and Essendon. I wouldn't call that an easy run home.

I'd say Richmond are well primed to go back to back given we're they sit on the table and the likelihood of playing all their finals at the MCG where they have an imposing record.

Port have a fairly easy run home so I'd expect them to comfortably make the top 4 unless they drop there bundle and get complacent.

Hawthorn are the interesting side for me. Games against Geelong and Sydney will be telling. They could finish anywhere from 4th to 10th. Win one or both of those games and the top 4 isn't out of the question given their run home.

GWS have a tough run home and given the injuries to Patton and one or two others and the suspension of Cameron for a few more weeks it's a testing time. They'll just sneak in imo.

The Eagles have tough draw too as do Melbourne and Sydney. The Eagles appear safe if they win today. The Swans could be in trouble.

Geelong's biggest game of the season happens on Thursday. A win over in Adelaide with 4 games to come at GMHBA Stadium sets us up for a top 4 tilt. Lose that and we could could finish in the bottom half of the 8 and travel to Perth in an elimination final. Worst still miss the finals completely If we drop both games to Hawthorn and Richmond at the MCG. I think we'll win at least 1 of those games.

Collingwood appear likely but they face a big test today. A win against Essendon and one would assume they'd almost lock away a top 4 spot. Lose and they're back in the pack fighting with the rest of the teams.

I'm still not sure where Nth sit in the scheme of things. They're the most interesting team still in it.

You can forget for the rest unless Essendon win today.

My final 8:

Richmond
Port Adelaide
Geelong
Collingwood
------------------------
Sydney
West Coast
GWS
Melbourne

Which would make the first week of the finals:

Qualifying Final 1 - Richmond v Collingwood @MCG (97,000)
Qualifying Final 2 - Port Adelaide v Geelong @AO (50,000)

Elimination Final 1 - Sydney v Melbourne @SCG (45,000)
Elimination Final 2 - West Coast v GWS @OS (55,000)

Good post.

A Tigers v Pies qualifying final would be absolutely massive. If I'm not mistaken, that would be the first final between two 'traditional big 4' clubs in a very long time (except for the Blues v Tigers EF in 2013 but that wasn't for a realistic shot at a flag. A QF is so much bigger).

Crowd would easily rival last year's QF and PF at the MCG. Neutrals throughout Australia would be reaching for the popcorn.

A Tigers v Pies qualifying final would be absolutely massive. If I'm not mistaken, that would be the first non-elimination final between two 'traditional big 4' clubs in a very long time. Crowd would easily rival last year's QF and PF at the MCG. Neutrals throughout Australia would be reaching for the popcorn.
Would be massive indeed. Perhaps the most hyped non-GF ever, certainly for a long time anyway. Definitely wouldn't be a safe, cuddly environment though. Much like a showdown/derby final would be really.
Crowd wise I'd love a Richmond-Melbourne or Collingwood-Melbourne final in the first 3 weeks. Reckon that would have the potential to properly fill the joint, since the Dees can fill the MCC.

As a neutral there is no spectacle quite like watching two fierce rivals go head to head in a final with a loud crowd.

I think ? the last big 4 big final was 2000 - Carlton v Essendon prelim

Honestly the ladder is:

1. Richmond.
2-18. Everyone else.

They are simply just the best team this season... by a long way.
