The real reason footy is "ugly" in 2014

So no GWS if they went up? Still a 16 club comp?

Maybe I should have added a smiley face to indicate it was tongue and cheek.
A team in Western Sydney was being planned for 10 years maybe the dogs should have gone up there they wouldn't have neededed to change their name like North. :)

I remember back in the early 90's when the bears and the swans where on there knees stretched with talent, boy there where some crap matches and massive blowout back then.
There have always been crap teams only now every match is live and we get to
see it all unfold.

yeah 18 teams is to much and will make it so much harder for equlisation to kick in, but its all about the TV $$$ for the AFL and expanding in to uncharted waters the Victorian club are no longer there major concerns. The only way to fix or disguise the fact is introduce divisions or conferences like they do in the U.S

Australia doesn't have the talent to supply 18 afl teams so the standard has inevitably dropped.

Have been saying it for years. All the expansion has done is strip the second tier or players.

AFL should be an elite competition with a standard to match. Never going to get it with nearly 400 blokes taking the field each week in a population density like ours with 3 other codes of football.

I hate to bring the notorious Jimmy Hird into it, but I remember reading a couple of articles from his early days which covered the time he'd put into his skills away from Essendon.

He'd wear Sherrins (stolen from Essendon, yes Bombers fans he's been screwing you since day 1) down to the bladder kicking them at a chalk circle on a wall. He'd have to hit the circle like 100 times straight on his left and right before he'd quit. He'd do something similar kicking the ball against the wall and marking it on the rebound.

It illustrates being highly skilled doesn't come without work. It's a highly repetitive process. It would be interesting to know if any poorly skilled player today comes close to the amount of time Hird spent in total on skills back then.

I dont think players are allowed to do extra off the bat skills work lest the sports science boffins self combust. Too much goal kicking practice weakens those delicate hammies that have been so carefully sculpted under lab like conditions.

Hawthorn and Geelong are more the exception these days. Most other sides don't have the depth when a couple of important players are out, and really need their full side to be out on the park to be competitive.

Exactly - all their depth aren't AFL quality. There's not enough elite players to go around.

Jimmy kicking on his left? Smells like bullshit to me.

And he still couldn't kick!

There you go, it's the expansion clubs fault. Here I was thinking its just shit skills and a competition mostly full of very fit athletes for the reason:confused:

it's a sad state of the game if there isn't enough talent for 18 teams!

It depends what you want. It's doubtlessly diluted with so many clubs. If you want an absolute showcase of the elite talent of our game, this isn't it.

If there was an absolutely elite league of 10 - 12 clubs, imagine how good it would be? A lot of the blokes who clearly can't kick, handball or tackle etc, or handle pressure, would be gone to where they belong, state leagues. THAT would be an elite competition.

how do players become elite if not exposed to the top level? you wont be born with all the ability,

The system is designed so teams eventually fail and other clubs improve. It is the whole purpose of the draft.
So people are surprised that some teams are crap?
Melbourne are shit because they cannot recruit good players in spite of all the low draft picks
And because they have NFI about player development.

Seriously, am I the only ******* person who is enjoying footy this year? I've watched plenty of neutral games and enjoyed them all.
Nope Im enjoying it to

I am wondering where in the world these supposed elite competitions with no crap teams are played...

There needs to be 22 sides in the competition so everyone plays each other once and make the scheduling fair. The reality is in every elite competition there are crap teams. If you really want them to have something to fear instead of getting top picks then introduce relegation.

Scheduling is only fair if each team plays each other twice, once at home and once away. I've never understood why this isn't the case

I wonder how people whinged about the quality of football pre-internet.

i have saying this all season .... the 2 teams with the best young talent are the worst supported teams in the league ... no wonder crowds are down

18 teams is too many for an elite competition

And some want 20.....
