The real reason footy is "ugly" in 2014

Says the blame is on the expansion clubs. Cites a game between two of the original clubs in the competition.

Makes sense.

Perhaps the AFL should focus on improving the quality of the lower grades first. This obsession with drafting and playing 18 year olds because "they have potential" just results in a comp full of kids that are green as grass. Isn't that what reserve grade is for? Development. Leave the kids in the 2's for a few years and bring them in to the elite squads when they are actually ready.

Seriously, am I the only ******* person who is enjoying footy this year? I've watched plenty of neutral games and enjoyed them all.

Every single year there are threads created in the first half of the season complaining about the state/style/health of the game. These dissipate about the half way point after people realise that fundamentally it's still the same ****ing game that we all love.

I think the biggest factor in the angst this year is the fact that the media don't stop banging on about it. Seriously, someone ****ing shoot Robbo and it would go a long way to quelling the unrest.

The talent pool is vastly deeper now than it was doing the 1980s, when the elite talent across the country was distributed among 30 teams.

Coaching determines the way the game is played, within the rules of the game. If the game is ugly then the coaches are to blame - not the expansion clubs.

Not if the clubs in question changed from year to year.
You mean like before the suns and giants were in? The demons seemed to get a fair suck of the sav draft time but did nothing with it.
It all just seems like an easy excuse to blame the 2 new clubs for other clubs failure to rebuild.

No, as in if the competition didn't have the same ten or twelve clubs every year.

There will always be clubs that have a rough decade or so. Itd be nice otherwise but it wont happen.
Even if we have our 10 team comp. You will still have clubs that will be bottom for a while.

The expansion sides.

It has nothing to do with high possession game plans, the "rolling maul" , the death of full forwards, the death of the bump.

Anyone who watched Hawthorn-Geelong or Collingwood-Essendon in the last week wouldn't say the game is ugly. Played by the best competitors and the best sides, modern footy is fantastic to watch. The problem is that with 18 sides the talent pool is spread too wide. We do not have enough capable footballers to support an 18 team domestic competition.

I watched Melbourne-Sydney last night and it was truly torturous - mostly because of the complete lack of ability in the majority of Melbournes players. About 80 people are on Afl lists that wouldn't have been four years ago. This largely pile up on the lists of the worst sides making 4-5 games every weekend very difficult to watch.

Australia doesn't have the talent to supply 18 afl teams so the standard has inevitably dropped.

I don't think this explains it. Those expansion sides are loaded with elite talent. They just happen to be young and not hardened or physically strong enough to compete with the best. You can already see their development this season. As for Melbourne, give them a couple of their missing key forwards last night and they would have been in that game up to their necks against the perennial finalists and 2012 premiers, Sydney. You need a new theory.

Most ridiculous thread ever.

It may play some part, but there are a myriad of reasons why some games are scrappy and the game sorts itself out.
Honestly the biggest reason is probably inept management from some clubs like melbourne and brisbane, (carlton could be better) and the fact that gws and suns are still young and inconsistent, that makes for some blow out and scrappy games.

But every sport has this...i see a lowly team in La Liga put everyone behind the ball to try to defend and aim to draw against Real Madrid, or 2 lowly teams where it is really scrappy and nothing magical happens...how many boring, one-sided games are there in the NBA?

Imagine if we only had 10 or 12 teams. No diluted talent pool, and every team plays each other twice, home and away.

There certainly wouldnt be any clubs going through years of being shit thats for sure. Brisbane Bears, Sydney Swans, St Kilda, Fitzroy, Richmond, none of those clubs would have had to go through so many years of being shit if Gold Coast and GWS werent added back in the 70s.

Starting to think sending the best talent to the worst clubs for development is hurting the competition

Maybe raising the drafting age, and redirecting some of the footy dept tax to the next tier down for good development might help.

Obviously they wont abandon the reverse draft

Yeah well saw news footage of a training camp in New York. Saw some tall dudes who could run like the wind and fly like Superman. All the while, talented footballers at TAC level are being overlooked because some teams have a 'no less than 180 cm' rule.

Most ridiculous thread ever yet OP's suggestion may play some part?
