The real reason footy is "ugly" in 2014

I hate to bring the notorious Jimmy Hird into it, but I remember reading a couple of articles from his early days which covered the time he'd put into his skills away from Essendon.

He'd wear Sherrins (stolen from Essendon, yes Bombers fans he's been screwing you since day 1) down to the bladder kicking them at a chalk circle on a wall. He'd have to hit the circle like 100 times straight on his left and right before he'd quit. He'd do something similar kicking the ball against the wall and marking it on the rebound.

It illustrates being highly skilled doesn't come without work. It's a highly repetitive process. It would be interesting to know if any poorly skilled player today comes close to the amount of time Hird spent in total on skills back then.

Doubt it. In between hitting up the clubs, updating twitter/instagram and recovery, there wouldnt be much time for improving your ability to perform the tasks in which you are paid to execute.

When your team is winning u think footy looks great. Lets face it, compared to 20 odd years ago there are more victorian clubs with horrendous lists who have no light at the end of the tunnel. Of course vic supporters from ess, melb, stk, rich, Carl, bulldogs etc aren't gonna enjoy watching football these days.

It's the obsession with recruiting "athletes" over footballers that is the root of this problem. Clubs are obsessed with filling lists with guys who can run and jump, but can't kick to save themselves

That would be a sensible proposition if the AFL were interested in running a fair sporting competition. Instead, their goal is to maximise revenue.
Wonder if you would think the same if your club was bottom 8?
Silly suggestion. A 2nd division would never work in australia.
Having top clubs in growing areas will bring more talented youth into the game.

You have a point.
But I still enjoy football in general but would enjoy it more if Melbourne were playing well.
