The "Richmond haven't beaten anyone " myth thread

Franklin, Roughead & Rioli have played together 89 times. Their combined total of 1 goal today is the lowest in any of those games.

Great stat. Average 7.44 goals before today.

Richmond's backline has been almost completely unsung, yet has conceded the fewest points against of any Richmond side since 1969. The merits of Chaplin, Rance, Houli and Morris are continually questioned in mentions of the "shaky" defence, but they have turned in good seasons. As promised by Hardwick, we have followed a similar blueprint to Hawthorn, whose tighter defence was the first sign they were on the march.

A fact is it?

You beat them last year to in a similar position and the Hawks didn't handle the wet when the rain started.

Lets see what happens in September.

Back tracking are we.

At the time i wrote that it was fact. I bet you were just hanging to quote me as well as soon as a top 4 team fell over when playing you.

Hahaha the hawks just "fell over" did they? ... Nothing we did had anything to do with the result? ... What an idiotic thing to say, don't comment on anything that you have zero idea about. Worry about your mob trying to limp into the finals.

So I guess Richmond beat someone last year too eh?

and the Hawks didn't handle the wet when the rain started.

Hawthorn didn't handle the dry in the first quarter either. And why should Hawthorn be excused for not handling wet weather?

Lets see what happens in September.

This thread wasn't about who Richmond beat in the finals, but who Richmond has beaten so far. And beating the top team in the league is pretty darn impressive. Rubbish post for a moderator.

Richmond defence tore the forward line a new one today.
Hawks now have two bogey teams

One of those days Wbby. We could play again next week and the result could be totally reversed. I said the same to a Kangas mate of mine a few weeks back when they towelled us up. If you don't bring your A-game against probably a dozen teams in this comp you get shown up. Only a fool wouldn't tip the Hawks to bounce back over the next week and next two months.

Because so many teams get beaten by the hype of Hawthorn before a ball is bounced. Richmond have done well to win today and done better than I expected this year but footy is about winning the last game of the year and the road to the premiership doesn't go through Hawthorn.
This is true for the likes of Swans, Hawks and Cats, but for Richmond, it is all about making finals. We won't win the premiership. We probably won't even get to prelim final day. But the next step in our development from rabble to respect was to make finals.

We are exactly where we should be. We are sixth, and of the five teams above us we have beaten two of them. That's perfectly respectable. Find me a team that's sixth and has beaten everyone above them. Not many will exist as chances as, if you're able to beat all of the top 5/6 teams in the comp, you're probably right up near the top somewhere yourself.

Commonsense post.

This is excruciating.

Richmond are an average team that has capitalised on a dream draw.

Every time they've played a good team this year, they've been pantsed.

And listening to the media trying to talk them up is vomit inducing.

The team is structurally flawed. Deledio is pathetic in big games, too easily tagged. Martin hasnt had an influence after half time. And Riewoldt offers nothing when not kicking goals.

These are all patterns.
Maybe you should start watching Richmond games, fool.

Can't believe no one jumped on this sooner. The thing with Richmond is, you have a selection of confirmed spuds, then a group of spuds who appear as spuds seemingly every second week.

Confirmed spuds:

Daniel Jackson
Shaun Grigg
Matt White

Part-time spuds:
Chris Newman
Tyrone Vickery
Matt Arnott
Alex Rance
Ricky Petterd

Richmond still have way too many "almost there" players to ever realistically challenge for a flag.

Rance is closer to AA than spud.

First of all - congrats for beating the Hawks so convincingly.

Secondly, quoting posts from before that game doesn't make them untrue. You guys have definitely taken the next step this year, but previous good efforts have been forgotten due to some kind of inept performance in the following weeks. You've definitely had some good victories (in the last few years, not just 2013) but until those absolute howlers disappear (such as v NM) there will still be a perception you don't get it done.

Good comment about winning the exact games you should at 6th though - spot on. Snare the wins against one or two above you, and beat a majority of the rest.

what is interesting is people claiming the following are spuds:

Rance 23 yoa key back
Arnot 19 yoa

Yeah, Rance obviously isn't a spud. I think the reason its a query is that you guys have a history of not developing your draft picks. There's a perception that they just won't come good. That's not the case any longer, but you'll have to live with those sort of comments for a while still.

They're not untrue, but they're are premature. And by the way, Richmond is not the only finals side who has had bad performances this season.

Eh, I just think motleylemon is an ignorant fan who doesn't know about players from other clubs. Suggesting that ml's criticism is related to Richmond's poor drafting seems rather generous. In truth, Richmond's recruiting hasn't been too bad in recent seasons.
