Surely the finding of the inquiry must be that the NACC don't actually know what their job is.

They are doing exactly what the ALP intended - create the impression they will investigate and do something but under no circumstances actually do anything to pollies or senior Canberracrats. I am sure eventually some junior staff will cop it so they can say look what we can do.

Basically we were promised one like the NSW one and got the equivalent of Dodgy Dan's neutered Victoria one. Not much better than Scomos never have one but a lot more pricey.

For those unaware of who Gail Furness is she was the chief head kicker at the CSA Royal Commission. Her role now is to investigate whether the NACC followed its procedures with regard to the Robodebt referrals.

It will prove one of two things - the NACC is a neutered organisation or that they pulled up on their own.

It's the most perverse aspect of our system of govt...that politicians get to decide to what extent they are accountable.

If there was a plebiscite on the accountability of members of parliament the vote in favour of a NACC with real teeth would be 90%+.

How do the results of the Robodebt scandal point to anything else other than a loss of public trust? And what fatuous reasons was the Australian public supplied with to excuse the NACC’s gobsmacking decision not to pursue one of the greatest failures of public administration in our history? Apparently the NACC (yes the anti-corruption one) has decided instead to focus on “lessons learnt”.

This is weasel-wording, vacuous buck-passing of the highest order. “Lessons learnt?” What lessons exactly? Why wasn’t the public told what these grandiose lessons are? What measures are now in place to monitor if the “lessons” are heeded? Who is doing the teaching? And who are the people who’ve learnt the alleged lessons?

That is especially true for the NACC, which was promoted as central to restoring faith in our Federal Parliament and government after the disasterous years of the Morrison government. It's looking like a dud.

And while Albanese won't want to do it before an election as it will reflect badly on him personally, it seems pretty clear to me that a change at the top is needed now..probably as a precursor to a proper review of why it's failing.
