MG has improved immensely since Billy left.

Sure they still make a few errors but it seems to run much smoothly now and both hosts jell with each other nicely.

I also like how they have a guest host once or twice a week, eg Simon Marshall today.

Breaks it up a bit.

The problem with MG is the self indulgence of Maher and Watson.

They spend the first hour of the program talking about everything, but Sport.

I remember their return show after the XMAS break ,they spent the first 20 minutes, discussing Maher's engagement and Watson's extended family.

The show would immediately improve with more interviews. You should have a minimum of 6 interviews during a three hour show.

MG finally had a decent interview this morning - Misty Human, who beat Susie O'Neill in Sydney.

Nicole Livingstone was in the studio asking some hard questions and then they have to cut it short and go to the news.

When will they ever learn.

It was a good interview, but they built it up like Susie had accused her of being a cheat or something (which she didn't).

Talking to a swimmer while you have a swimmer in the studio is a good idea. Doran should take a leaf out of that book, cause he's out of his depth so often when talking to anyone who isn't a footballer, cricketer or Jon Steffenson.

That was embarassing. The producers ought to be given a severe dressing down for that.

The least they could do was continue the interview off air whilst the news was on and then replay it afterwards.

All we got was thinly veiled accusations that Hyman was a drug cheat and she barely had a chance to respond.

I think SEN thought they were going to get into a drug accusation interview, but when they replayed Susie's comments, she actually said she thought she wasn't a cheat, but was just disappointed that Susie didn't get a chance to race her again.

Hence Misty went on to talk about why she didn't swim again..

But then he would need a guest for every single interview. May as well just have the 12-4pm slot be open to special guests.

Yeah but if he only did it for when he spoke to someone from the worlds of rugby, golf, motor sport, boxing or soccer, then he'd only need an expert in once a month.

Casual Friday is the best part of Doran's show every week but it gets really annoying with the whole trying to date Rita thing.

Y eah it gets real annoying I felt sorry for her cause it was obvious she wasn't interested and they kept pushing it. Its a good show though.

i felt like smashing the radio in when those 2 kept pushing her to date this bloke who had a conviction "a couple of years ago", **** alarms bells obviously rang in rita's mind, this bloke didn't offer up what he'd done so no wonder she didn't commit. stupid doran and harford keep pushing, all i could think of was rita madly making hand gestures to them to shut the **** up while she tried to back out of it.
they carried on like a couple of primary school kids.

Been able to listen to SEN the last few days....been OS and cannot be arsed to listen over web.
MG is better without Brownless. KB and Mark Allen are as good a tandem as that station has.
Listened to entire Born In the USA show last night. I think that is is the funniest and most insightful show on this or any other station.

Yeah it is, easily.

Pretty interesting to hear Triple M's Brian Taylor ring in to Mutt Thompson on Sunday to offer an opinion that the AFL should be looking at replicating the U.S. NBA's banning of zone defence and playing man-to-man only.

If Mutt wasn't clueless he could have pointed out to BT that the ban on zone [illegal] defences in the NBA was lifted around 2001-2002 due to man-to-man only defence in the late 90s leading to a series of one-on-one match-ups while other players stood around watching. This created boring low scoring unexciting games that lead to a slump in NBA popularity. The re-introduction of the zone lead to more perimeter passing and higher scoring exciting games.

BT failed to explain how he hoped man-to-man only in the AFL would have the opposite effect it did in the NBA and just how his zone defence ban would be managed. There seemed to be more excitement at SEN Central over the fact that BT rang.

Jock Sniffing.

It’s that time of year to take a look at how SEN is travelling.

A hangover after a late night grog-fest limit’s a start to KB. Although my early morning slumber was intermittingly interrupted by what sounded like Andrew Gaze impersonating Bill Brownless.

First things first. A quick look at the sports world’s lamest radio website to check out the schedules and a perusal of the bio’s.

Hmmmm, what a surprise, according to the station’s website…YES, you can still hear Bill Brownless in the mornings…“Billy can be heard between 6.00-9.00am Monday to Friday on SEN1116”. Nope, I guess he doesn’t call the footy anymore, just heard in the mornings. For the first time I will type Amateur Hour radio!

A couple of years ago Mark Fine had nothing but his smiling mug and no bio. Take a guess at an update. You guessed right. Meanwhile, abreast of bio-less Finey is the irritating mug shot of Mutt Thompson. This irritant must have connections up top for him to be on the radio. There can be no other explanation.

What a pity that Dave Warner didn’t do a Dean Brogan and slug this poodle that was chasing him at the airport the day after Warner’s great knock in the Twenty20 game. For any listener that’s heard Mutt on weekends while waiting for scoring updates, a great running gag over the summer weeks provided to the listeners at the expense of this egghead was his inability to work out that musician Kid Rock’s “All Summer Long” track was not, as he thought, a straight version of “Sweet Home Alabama.” Eventually a deflated Tony Scibeci one day simply gave up trying to explain it to this dimwit. It was pure gold.

Egghead: “O.K., so ‘Werewolves Of London’ was sung by Warren Zevo”

Schibeci: [for the third time] no, no, ZevoN

Enough of the endless Muttsta material for now. Down to business.

Hungry For Sport - 3/3/09

KB’s Take: Well, most fans think the game of AFL is getting ugly; rolling zones, Clarko’s Cluster, and good old - flooding …handball is getting out of hand replacing the kick, and Mick Malthouse has called for an extra substitute player to cover injury concerns. Fresh players coming of the conveyer-belt bench enables teams to employ so-called ugly tactics. Coaches love interchange, it enables them to play chess and checkmate the opposition. Maybe they might eventually kill the goose that lays the golden egg. And maybe we need more substitutes for injured players and less interchange.
I’m KB and that’s my take.

Hear hear. The little master of SEN never waivers.

KB goes straight to the listeners for their opinions… but first, enter the Putzster, Putz Smith. KB states his case; Putz says “Kevin, I’ve said for a long time, that really we need somebody to sit down and say these are the things that are essential for our game and we will keep them at all costs.”
Well duh, Putz.

Usual discussion on what the AFL should do, etc, transpires:
Caller one wants 18 players on the field and 2 reserves [humour]
Caller two wants 4 interchange and 2 emergencies, but, but, but…
KB muses: “what do we want the interchange for [Putz]? Do we want it for injured players to make it an even contest or do we want it as a tactic?”
Putz replies: Um, look I certainly think if you go to substitutes, that would be abused by coaches, no doubt. I mean they twist everything else. Why wouldn’t they misuse that?
Caller three wants substitutes due to injuries leaving teams short of healthy players.
Caller four says KB is so far off the mark calling out to leave the game alone; blames KB for changing the rules.
Caller five asks KB if he‘s been given instructions in the past regarding rule changes, etc; need to slow down on rule changes.
Putz re-enters the fray: “[Caller five] no game - I can’t think of a game that has so radically changed as AFL footy in such a short space of time…”
Caller Six repeats callers four and five and also gives Demetriou a serve and blames the media.
Caller Seven wants contested marks.
KB moves quickly: “…that’s why hands-in-the-back was brought in.”
Caller Eight: Richmond fan angst at rolling zones. Tiger angst is never far away.

The whole segment continues with callers doing the usual naïve dance around the laws of unintended consequences (re: cricket’s referral system and taxing the rich which allows schmucks like me to get hand-outs so I can listen to the radio all day, drink piss and not have to work;)) But as usual KB is never stuck for an answer with any callers and is SEN’s best, and still most entertaining host.

10:07 - 10:19
Michael Kasprowicz interview
KB discusses referral system and all current things cricket. Mitchell Johnson was a promising tennis player as a teenager before taking up cricket at 15/16-years-of-age.

10:25 - 10:37
Gary Cole interview (Melbourne Victory Football Op. Manager)
Discusses A-League and Melbourne Victory issues

10:42 - 10:50
Get Something Off Your Chest
Cricket referral system and technology for soccer and rugby; AFL rule changes. Amazing how many people want the sports left alone but yet so many have ideas on lots of rule changes.

10:55 - 11:00
Living in America - with the Aussie skirt employed by ESPN to host international segments for international Sportscenter. Where’s Salisbury when you need him?
KB’s wondering whether Brett Ogilvy is big news in the States. Cherry Tree is on the money with Ogilvy, March Madness and Nick Davis trying out for punting in the NFL. Probably better she does an Aussie flavour US segment and leave the heavy hitting US sports stories such as the stunning opening week to NFL free agency to Born In The USA. I guess too, after all, she’s better looking than Salisbury so he can keep his day job.:D

11:07 - 11:19
Dave Culbert on athletics
Dave sure tries to pump it up.

11:25 - 11:37
Favourite memories of Olympic Park [SMS and talkback] Unlike Doran, KB can discuss many events that happened at the Olympic Park complex, from athletic meets to music concerts.

11:43 - 11:55
Stuart Gull interview on subject of North Ballarat being a base for an AFL venue. For the record, the former tough-guy Swan had 4 fights on TV Ringside for four wins and one points loss, and the decking of Bomber, Ron Andrews at Windy Hill in 1976.

11:59 - 12:00
Sports Trivia

Pretty much the same as last year but KB is still SEN‘s best value.

With some disappointment I recently read that he patron saint of this thread, Manbearpig, has stopped listening to Doran’s Good Oil. I really think MBP wanted to like Doran but there’s probably only so much one person can take. I don’t really have the stomach for it but I’ll have to give it a go this week.:(

Checked in on Monday at 1pm for the Rubbo hour and got someone I think is called Happinin’ Harf. It surely can’t be “Happinin’,” especially in a world of “Pistol” Pete Maraviches, “Magic” Johnsons, “Lethal” Leigh Mathews’, and “Merciless” Ray Mercers. Harford’s nickname can’t be that bad. It sounded like Doran wasn’t actually sure why Rubbo was unavailable, either.

I wish I did like him, cause there's only so much of Denis Walter's charm one can take.

I heard most of KB today. When they talk about stuff like the Olympic Park topic, KB comes into his own.

Thanks Monty. It is great listening to your in depth wrap up of a program. I've started FT work this year after being a student and have not been able to listen to any program from 8.15 til 4.30 since mid-January. It is great to read what happens in a program like KB's.

Please do a wrap of Casual Friday if you can, was one of my favourite shows.

It would be WAY too much to expect the SEN website to update their podcasts daily, or weekly, or even monthly for that fact.

MG back to their "best" today.

They interviewed a competitor in the Australian monopoly championships. After the interview the asked callers to ring in with (you guessed it), places on the monopoly board that resemble AFL players.

Tim Watson is a zonk

To be fair, the producers are usually responsible for decisions on segments like that.

Thought Watson and Maher were very good with James Sutherland and Gurusinghe this morning. Showed empathy and got some decent information which was conveyed clearly and succinctly.

1. how the hell do you get KBs take word for word? i swear you're on the money with what he said!

2. dave and athletics. well, im not a fan of aths but kb at least knows his stuff. dont mind them talking about it, something different :thumbsu: but yes, dave really really was pumping up the sport (like any aths man would)

yesterday didnt doran have the fitness guru and hoggy in at the same time. it was actually good listening (for the cricket stuff). always refreshing to hear people (i.e. fitness guy) ask questions to an expert in a different field (i.e. in this case hoggy and cricket). i swear i heard doran say "it's not usual that i can say i havent done my research, but...."

Too right, MBP. Walter gives off a demographic problem.

And with KB it seemed like he was ready to debate whether Bon Jovi actually played Olympic Park. A few weeks ago a guy rang in with a funny horse name that KB knew. KB also remembered a horse about 15 years ago with the same name and a couple of specific races it won. Amazing!

Um, doesn't that Casual Friday feature a Leftist Feminist single mother? I learned in life to run the other way and avoid any contact with that species. Trust me, she'd be trouble. Hence I never listen. But I'll check it out - once!

Seriously, the website is a farce. Why would anyone pay money as a sponsor. I'm gonna post more on that by using a comparison.

Cheers.
