The toughest ever players for North...

Yeah, the 50s defenders were legendary for their toughness.

Of the players I've seen, the ones that stand out would be Archer, Teasdale, Stevens, Carey, Jimmy Krakouer, Chisnall, Schimma, Martyn, Pickett, Rock, Colbert, King, Briedis, Dench, Kekovich, Ischenko, McDonald, Laidley, Dowdle, Icke. And John Law.

The current crop has a high standard to maintain !!

1. Glenn Archer
2. John Law
3. Wayne Carey
4. Anthony Stevens
5. Wayne Schimmelbush
6. Ross Smith
7. Jimmy Krakouer
8. Leigh Colbert
9. Mick Martyn
10. Jason McCartney (coming back from Bali get's him a mention)*

Gary Dempsey in the same category as McCartney.

Haven't mentioned anyone earlier than Dempsey (70's) - as I was too much in awe of them as a little tacker to appreciate whether they were tough bastards or not.

Also add to that list Malcolm Blight

Anthony Rock never used to flinch.

Arch is obviously the toughest of all time - anyone who says otherwise simply knows nothing about life, or is just a liar

Yeah i'd second Rock... I remember his clash with Dougie Hawkins, good solid hit and he got straight up, and ran over him.

Without stating the obivous (Carey and Arch), and from what ive seen, i'd say Colbert, Pickett, and Pratty never shirks.

No love for Maurice Boyse or Roger Podalczak?

Lee Pemberthy never shirked an issue. ;)

LOL!! candid names from the long lost archives...

Battle of Britain tape should be getting a mention...BIG MAC was pretty tough that day.. so was that lil' fella wearing #23... or was it #53 CRUNCH!!

There was no bluff about Tiger

I went and asked for his autograph during a training session in the late 70's.
I was a fifteen year old mad NORTH MELBOURNE supporter. To a kid being alongside a champion and a well built and defined athlete was special. I said to him as he was signing ( we were playing Carlton on the Saturday ), "you will kill them this week Brent". Remember this was early in the week..."you're joking son, I'm playing on Bruce Doull. Well, he was right as Bruce held him almost useless on the day. I'll never forget the man's honest warmth that I felt as a supporter and I have always been a member since.

With all due respect to Tiger (who was a genuine big game performer), I remember him telling my Dad once that he liked to put on a bit of bluff to make his opponents think twice ; unfortunately, one day at Arden St against Hawthorn (back when their backline WAS tough), he threw one at Brian Douge (or was it Gene Chiron ?), and was horrified to realise that he had made contact, and Douge went ballistic......Tiger said he had to hop the fence to get away from him. :D

He also threw one at Ian Bremner and got sat on his arse. He was a big man, but there was a bit of bluff in his antics. Used to throw his arms around a lot.

That's a great story and hope the youngsters are watching. This club is full of absolute champions and hard nuts who have played the game, unlike some journ's who persist in degrading the club. GET ON BOARD ROO SUPPORTERS!

Urch?? Not the toughest but still pretty tough customer when he was fit!

Pity we delisted him b4 he could get his body right.

Its a pity he couldnt get his body right so we didnt have to delist him.

My Dad used to reel off the same three names - in order - Ted Jarrard, Pat Kelly and Laurie Icke. He used to go on and on about how it was part of a backline that made clubs fearful of coming to Arden St. I heard it so many times that the names are forever burned into my brain.

To his delight, I picked up a footy trivia book from the very late '70s or early '80s and inside were famous player's lists. Bob Skilton listed his 10 most skillful, Crackers Keenan listed his 10 biggest sooks (Don Scott made No1) etc etc.

Jack Dyer's list of the ten toughest footballers ever to play the game:

1. Ted Jarrard
2. Pat Kelly
3. Laurie Icke

Don't even remember the rest.

To back that up....
I was on a long train trip and was chatting to an old Essendon supporter. My Day used to tell me tale after tale about how the North backline would belt Coleman from pillar to post. So I mentioned that my Dad used to watch the footy around the same time as this old bloke - had some favourite players to - then reeled off the names, Jarrard, Kelly, Icke. I swear the bloke went bright red. You could almost see steam coming out of his ears! Didn't talk to me for the rest of the trip.

Another one....
We were watching the Fox Footy version of Grumpy Old Men and someone brought up the same three names - again in that order. Bobby Davis just went quiet and sat there shaking his head. Eventually he just quietly said "tough.......... very very tough" without even looking up, before KB cut to a break.

Needless to say my Dad was over the moon.

Leigh Colbert was one of the most courageous and toughest players to wear the royal blue and white.
Colby is right up there. Remember his first game back from serious injury backing into pack marking contests with eyes only for the footy? Insane.

Cant believe no one has mentioned Pikey and Blakey hard as nails the both of them!!!!!!!!!
