Incumbent candidates have struggled globally since the inflation surge (I'm pretty sure an incumbent hasn't won an election since inflation started going wild), so the Dems had that going against them. But they really need to figure out how to better control narratives if they want to remain politically viable. Their economy actually performed better under Biden than any other developed nation, but it didn't matter because the Dems are ****ing terrible at controlling the narrative. Part of that is because they have no idea how to navigate social media whereas the right is really ****ing good at it. For as much as people like to meme on Musk for buying Twitter, this election result absolutely vindicated it for him (even if it's a financial black hole). They need to figure out how to control the vibes or they're gonna keep losing elections that they shouldn't be losing.
Also, their messaging on Trump was all over the place. You can't talk about how someone is an existential risk to democracy but present the message by way of civility politics. It sends massive mixed signals to people who are undecided. If you want people to believe that he's an existential risk then the presentation of the message actually needs to match its content. You can't just call someone a fascist like you're discussing minor tax reform.
