The war against renewable energy

Solid state batteries are about to get mass produced … around 12000 cycles and cheaper again.

yep

battery technology will need to improve with leaps like this plus the eradication of PFAS

even silicon anodes over graphite with silicon doping will be a game changer

And this is the thing isn’t it? Batteries are going to happen. All/lots/most of the current problems are going to get resolved.

Australia needs to prepare.

Another great deal.

ZEROCHARGE
Pay ZERO to charge your battery
An energy usage rate of $0.00 between 11am - 2pm each day on all standard energy circuits. Controlled load or dedicated circuit will be charged on the normal usage rate.
ZEROHERO
Get paid when you use your battery
Get paid $1 a day when you draw Zero** power from the grid at peak times.

This a great deal for V2G. Power your house with your car during peak times and save … and get paid.

So I’m getting it’s a six year ROI , but in six years the ROI could be half that on a new battery

The ROI has many factors … location, amount of solar, size of battery, usage patterns etc.

With more and more “free” deals like above, it even allows people who can’t have solar to get a good return on a home battery. There are lots of portable set ups these days too.
It’s great retailers are encouraging consumers to shift cheap day time renewables to night time use.

NSWs grid is struggling this week. I was credited $32 yesterday for helping the grid when it needed it.
Today looks worse for the grid …

Retailers are making massive profits. If you aren’t constantly switching retailers every 1-2 months than your are getting ripped off.

What does this mean? I thought EV were usually on a dedicated circuit.

Some homes have controlled load for hot water…. Basically 2 meters inside your power box. This isn’t very common anymore.

NSW grid set to struggle between 3-8pm this afternoon. AEMO forecasting spot price to rise up to $17.5k very shortly.
Coal fired power stations breaking down, causing serious shortfalls.
Hopefully the grid holds together.. it’ll be interesting managing the wholesale rates.. I havent seen this long of a period before ..
I wish I had an EV and V2G set up, could earn around $700.

apparently it doesn’t make sense. 🤣

On one hand you claim renewables work and on the other hand you’re highlighting the market failure as renewables are not delivering reliable power.

Or are you celebrating an opportunity to exploit the failings?

The Western Australian government will offer struggling lithium miners tens of millions of dollars in interest-free loans as part of a new rescue package to keep the industry afloat amid a global downturn in prices.
Premier Roger Cook on Wednesday unveiled the $150 million package, which will be available to all lithium miners across the state, in a bid to save thousands of jobs and preserve an industry key to WA’s economic diversification plans.

Do you know what caused the nsw spikes? Guess not

Some maintenance activities.
Some breakdowns in power stations that would have been replaced years ago if it didn't become a difficult decision.

Trying to achieve renewable electricity by making the bad coal go away was never going to work.

Its like you have two crappy old cars, both unreliable, so you try to fix things by taking the crappiest one to the tip.

Except FIRM renewables are reliable.

We are going through a transition… a road that we should be a lot further down … except we had a decade of LNP governments .. a pack of f-wits.

You’d have to pretty stupid if you thought the transition could be instant.
I’m certain there is massive manipulation going on in the market too.
In the meantime and thanks to the lack of an energy policy from the LNP.. my home battery, at current rates, will be paid off in under 4 years.

They absolutely didn't plan enough FIRM capacity, of any type. You are capitalizing on that, if you had a diesel generator, they'd buy that from you when they are desperate.

I'd like to see a system where they have even smarter meters and smart appliances.
You go off in the morning with your washing in the machine, your dishes in the dishwash.
When the grid says its a low demand time ( ie cheap ) they switch on.

Even things like frost free freezers. They have an electric heating element that switches on every 6 hours or so to get rid of the frost. It doesn't NEED to come on when it does. If it delayed a few hours or did it a bit early no problem.

People are doing that Via Home assistant… you can integrate the Amber wholesale price into it.

I manually set my washing machine and dishwasher to turn on in the middle of the day.
I’ve got my aircon set up on wifi and pre heat and cool using excess solar and the solar pool pump is connected with a cheap wifi smart plug.
You can get a catch solar relay for hot water etc…
Fridges should have built in rechargeable batteries that gets them through the night. They are making them.

There are lots of large scale batteries in the works which will help.
The difficulty is replacing Coal with the same amount of capacity. This will take time.
But 1 by 1 they are shutting down.

We look at countries like Germany, who are far smarter than us, and think "yeah they screwed up but we can do it better..."

The more times it happens the more the crazy Liberal policies look good.
