Who screwed up?

I must admit after the first few games last year I thought here we go, it's finally going to happen. I wrote after the Port game if this is his standard each week he's not just best 22, but probably would eventually be in our top dozen(ish) players. That was a genuinely good game of footy he played and quite comfortably the best of his career and then he did follow it up with some pretty handy matches over the next couple of months, even if none quite matched that Port performance.

But I think ultimately it was quite telling that when he finally started to get a bit of momentum into a career that had really struggled to get out of the blocks, he had a couple of poor games, picked an injury and then it just seemed like there was no will power to try and get back that early season form... This is obviously completely from the outside looking in but the impression I got was that after a bit of adversity (pretty minor as well, in the context of a professional sporting career) it was all just too hard to get back to where he was in April/May and he just sorta threw in the towel.

It's easy to potshot from the laptop and for all I (we) know he might desperately want to make the grade at AFL level... but gee he does not give the impression to the wider public.

As a wise man once said, “it’s not that they don’t love to win, it’s that they don’t hate to lose.”

I’m sure he wants it to work out. He’ll be happy if it works out. It’s not going to work out.

Sorry to say but I wasn’t disappointed when Jarrod left the club last year. When he was on trade radio talking about his best role being a third tall forward I knew the kid didn’t have the ticker. Trying to sell yourself in a position most clubs don’t put much stock in and not only that not backing yourself in to be a second key tall showed the kids mentality. We saw it early on, just didn’t have the mongrel to be a key forward but we saw some talent and did all we could to shoe horn him into the side anyway we could. Now GWS have found out the same with him, trialling him as a wingman just like we did.

If i could give Jarrod 5 cents worth of advice it would be this. Harden the **** up and get mad son, because your footy career hangs by a thread and unless you can show me you want to play, that you’d need to play, that your life hangs by a thread and you would stomp on anyone infront of you to make sure you survive, the harsh reality is you will just fade away like so many other talented boys that just didn’t have the heart.

AFLPA complaint incoming.

Geez - you might now have to apologise to Brander.

Edit - name correction. Friday night posting not my strength.

He pulled a Jetta and gave Simmo a piece of his mind, never played a game for us since.

I reckon he's destined to be an absolute star. Will end up being a huge black mark on Simmo's coaching career come the end of this season imo.

Averaged less than a goal a game from 13 disposals. Absolute star.

He never showed much mongel to make me believe he would make it as a tall forward. He was skillful and the club saw it to the extent we tried to find him a different role, one he might flourish in.

The saddest part is during his stint on the wing last year we wanted to re sign him but he wasn't interested. Even when it was obvious no one was keen on him during trade week Rohan O'Brien commented we would welcome him back but his manager and Jarrod pushed for us to delist him.

If he had stayed he probably would have played most of the year in multiple positions due to the state of our list. Sometimes the grass is not greener on the other side.

I wish him the very best in future endeavours.

Just didn't have either the ability or the will to have the dog hungry attack on the ball required for AFL.
