The Worst game you have been to Weather wise

The worst ive been to weather wise was not a vfl/afl game it was the 1992 SANFL Grand Final between Port Adelaide vs Glenelg. It was really warm untill time on in the 2nd quarter & it just teemed down for the rest of the game. I got absolutely drenched. Back at Alberton that night it was a cow paddock! Mud everywhere! Nathan Buckley won the Jack Oatey Medal for BOG! Kicked 1 of the best goals ive seen, a standing drop punt from the 50 with a water logged ball slipping over all at once. A few other games come pretty close, Essendon vs Collingwood Round 15 & VFL Park, Essendon vs Carlton & VFL Park 1991 round 18 were terrible.

13 degrees, 12millemetres of rain predicted around cbd tommorow

Have fun cats and richmond supporters!

does anyone remember any really bad games they went to or played in with the weather? if so please explain.

i vaugley remember a game at the mcg between freo and melbourne, about 8 degrees and rain

i remember that
like the whole mcg was a bath:p

Claremont (juniors) v Dalkeith Nedlands @ Point Resolution (under 9's)

blowing a gale & pissing down - we ended up winning 1.15 to 2.3 or something like that.

or

Melbourne V Fremantle @ Subi - melbourne won, it rained so much my 100% waterproof jacket stopped working & my phone died.

boy did we get drunk though.

Can you find that pic? Ive heard about that game, where supposedly one guy called out for a teammate and the opposition answered, pass to him, resulted in a goal the other way... may be an urban myth, but supposedly was that bad!

The story goes that it was the Carlton ruckman (allegedly 'Percy' Jones) who called out, "There it is." when he happened to spy the ball, when nobody else could actually see it. I've no capacity in finding any photos on WWW, much less re-posting them. One of the reasons I love this site is that I associate myself with people immeasurably more competent than I on these matters.

So, roll on. Who's got that picture from that game? I've recently seen it on here.

Jeff Farmer was the player. I looked out on the ground that day and all but one Freo player was wearing the long sleeves. You don't see that much any more. I ended up spending all of half time in the Cats Club using the hand dryers in the toilets trying to get my clothes dry and thaw out a bit.

It was in 2001 i think. The highway got flooded that day too and it took most people 4 or 5 hours to get back to Melbourne. Some creative bush bashing from me and my GF at the time saw us home in 2.

I just sold a record for that game on ebay. The pic in question was in the Herald Sun liftouts from last week and the Carlton player was Geoff Southby.

The story someone else was asking about was this... Fitzroy scored a point and it was so foggy the only reason anyone knew the ball had been kicked back into play was because they could hear it thudding of the boot. No one knew where the ball was until Percy Jones spotted it sitting on the deck and yelled out 'There it is', at which point a Fitzroy player standing nearby picked up the pill and ran in and slotted a goal.

I remember Norm Brown saying the only time he knew where the goals were was when the Lions were kicking to the scoreboard end and the attendants were putting a light on in there to give the Fitzroy boys a sighter.

That was the game that had the classic footage of Paul Peos trying to take a shot at goal and having to protect his face because he was being bombarded with large hailstones.

Jesus, I didn't realise you could sell 'Records' on E-bay. This may be my retirement.

Collingwood V Roos at Waverley 1987

Collingwood v North in 1987.

Waveryley of course

We kicked 2 goals the entire game i think.

Rained the whole day.

Car bogged. I was covered in mud.

never been so cold. a bath never felt better

Geelong vs. Kangaroos @ KP, can't remember what year, a few years ago I think, ground looked like a swimming pool. I believe Geelong were thrashed by the Roos.

Ah yes, roads leading back to Melbourne were blocked after the game due to flooding.I live 15 minutes drive away from SS and it took us at least an hour to get home.

Many games at Arctic Park where the weather was:

- Single figures
- Combination of rain, sleet and hail
- Wind chill that would make a penguin shiver

Made all the worse by the lack of undercover seating of course...

yep in 2000 I was there and it took me 3 hours to get back to Melbourne.

We also played Collingwood at the MCG that year it was 8 degress and raining non stop. We were 30 odd points down at half time and Sam Newman was telling people at half time to rip up their memberships...then we come out after half time and beat the pies...great memory.

Then of course there was the game against PA last year in Darwin...played in monsoonal rain the ground was like a swimming pool, literally.

Thanks for that diablo. My confidence was justified. How extraordinary that I forgot the other player in the photo was that bum Southby, the best full-back I've ever seen play for Carlton, despite the opinion of the AFL Team of the Century panel?

Yeah that was one of Kingy's finest games for the club, and Carl Steinfort totally chopped up Nathan Buckley.

There was also a game at the G against Collingwood in the late 90's where it was blowing a gale all day, and I was right in it on the top deck of the Ponsford, and we kicked 9.26 for the afternoon. Fortuantely it was a winning score.

I've been arguing with Carlton supporters about that very thing today on this thread. Get over there and help me out Skilts ;)

Horrible day - made sweeter by the fact we won. My missus was about to go OS for work for six months the next day but I couldn't miss my Rooboys. She was rapt when I got home at 9pm.

Another day at KP in 1980 when we kicked 4.3 up until early in the second quarter in fine weather and then it just pelted down from then on and we didn't score again. I made the mistake of wearning uggies that day - the old man warned me not but I wouldn't listen. A seven-year-old apparently does not know it all.

Ian Nankervis also kicked one of the best goals you will ever see that day. I'll see if I can find in on youtube, otherwise i'll upload it at some point.

The ground was under about 4 inches of water for the second half :D

Crows v Port 2006 it would've been. Ivan Maric payed his first game. Was a Saturday night and from memory it pretty much rained all game. I was sitting undercover but the wind blew the rain in and I got drenched. There were times when the ball was on the other side of he oval and you just had absolutely no idea what was going on. Turned out to be a reasonable game though :thumbsu:

Oh and in terms of heat, NAB Cp grand final this year. 40 degrees during the day and was in the sun for about the first qtr, although the temperature would've been about 36 by then.

These are the days you think about when your side wins the flag.

Richmond v Freo at the G a few years back. (2003 maybe?) Absolute monsoonal rain. It was back when there was a hole in the Ponsford Stand due to the construction work and you could see through it to the City. The rain was that heavy you could barely see the scoreboard from Level 4, the city was impossible to see at all.

1978 wafl grand final at subi between perth and east perth.
i have never seen rain like that which fell in the last quarter, turned the ground into a swimming pool.
I lived just up the road from Subiaco Oval as a 3 year old back then and I spent the whole game at the back gate because my parents took my sisters to the game and wouldn't take me. My grand parents couldn't loosen my grip on the back gate so they left me there thinking I would get bored soon and come inside.

The wettest game I went to was a state of origin game at the WACA in 90 or 91? It was before the banned umbrellas and I did not see a minute of the game and only knew a goal had been kicked when the cheers filtered through from the front row.

Anzac Day match in 2002. Such a wet and miserable day for a great occasion.

That wasn't brilliant, especially if you were on crutches!

But the worst ever was a Geelong v Brisbane game at Skilled in 2004. Max of 8 degrees in Geelong that day, freezing cold and raining. Lucky that I'd decided before the game that I wanted one of those Tooheys New russian hats and had to drink 2 jugs to get one. Otherwise the cold would've been unbearable.
