The Worst game you have been to Weather wise

Lightning Premiership, Pre-Season, Waverley Early nineties.

Was horrendous, and I went to Waverley\VFL Park well over 100 times as a Hawks fan over the years.

Famous photo from a famous game. Who's the Roys player trying to spot something through the soup ?
There was a quote (maybe Percy Jones) about how they could hear the thump of Southby kicking it out and they just all stood and waited till it bounced so they could find it.

See post #20 in this thread.

I'm at home at Carrara about to make the short trip just over to the ground, have the jumper dusted off and am having a warm-up beer, it is raining outside and there is lightning off in the distance heading my way.

I might have an addition to this thread in a few hours.

Port and Richmond at footy Park in 99. Had it all weather wise and didnt stop all night. I think the end score was like 32-30 or something.

Footscray vs St Kilda at VFL Park ( can't remember year but it was the game Plugger broke his leg ). It poured all day. Every supporter was sitting in the last 6 rows of the grandstands and the rain was still blowing in through the exits at the back of the grandstands. Wind chill factor made it feel about 4 degrees. WORST DAY EVER

First game Footscray played against West Coast at Western Oval. Fog set in in the last quarter and no one could see a thing.

Brisbane vs Western Bulldogs 1999. It absolutely poured Queensland style and I remember players sliding from half back to half forward in rivers of water. Sometimes the ball traveled further "upstream" than in the air. The drive back to Surfers after the game was even scarier.

Yeah, the weather was pretty cold and at least the rain was going down instead of across or else i'd be wet. bloody cold out there, which is probably why I ate heaps.

I've been going to the majority of the Swans games for the last 8 years and I genuinely can't remember anything too bad. Yay Sydney weather.

Supposed to be pretty crap tomorrow though. 16, rain and strong winds.

Did you sleep through the electrical storm in 2004 at the elimination semi final , sydney v west coast eagles at homebush.
it poured rain and the lightning strikes were awesome.
apparently the afl were talking about cancelling the game at halftime

also 1998 , semi final scg - swans v st kilda. we had concourse seats in front of the ladies and we sat in the rain without any protection and cheered our boys home. i remember late in the game ,nicky winmar being run down by micky o when winmar looked certain to goal. we were soaked at the final siren.
and possibly the coldest /wettest night in the sydney.
rd22 1996 swans v west coast eagles - scg. it poured rain and blew a gale night. swans won to finish minor premiers. worth getting a soaking for.

It was so ____ing cold today

I don't think the temperature was too low, but the wind chill caused uncontrollable shivers for me. Didn't help that the sun was being blocked out for the whole of the match.

Round 4, Friday, April 20, 2001 - Sydney v. Essendon (Night), SCG

I was under cover but the wind was blowing the rain under the awning. To make things worse we were getting absolutely flogged. Went to a warm pub at half time. Hated Friday night games ever since.

hawthorn v brisbane rd 20 2004 is one that comes to mind. there were plenty down at waverley that were appalling that i can't remember.

did anyone go to the brisbane bears vs saint kilda game at waverley, where there was a hailstorm and there endearing image of that game was of then-brisbane forward paul peos getting pelted with hailstones?

I was at that game. Managed to get undercover seats (next to David Wenham!) and didn't get wet coming to or from the ground. To top it off we won which makes a big difference to how much you can put up with.

The funny thing about the 'danger' of the lightning strikes was they were quite happy to have the little kids come on at half time to play Auskick.

A couple I can remember:
1989 Essendon v Footscray at Windy Hill - it was absolutely freezing and pissing down, and Windy Hill had that name for a reason. Absolutely torrential, and the ground was a total quagmire. Essendon only scored 3 goals for the game, but at least we won.
1996 Sydney v West Coast, round 22 at the SCG - if I was thinner, I'd have blown away.

And it's not AFL, but a local footy grand final at Henson Park a couple of years ago. Henson Park was virtually under water, my umbrella blew inside out and my mobile phone got waterlogged and I had to get a new phone the next week.

For me it was today. Not just the rain (which was all day), I don't think we got above 8 degrees.

Yeah i was in the cheersquad the whole game and i was soaked after the game. It was right up there with Richmond vs Freo the other year (maybe 2002) when Stafford played on when Kellaway said he would shepperd him but he didnt and he got pulled up holding the ball lol.

Worst game I've played in was under 15s and I'd slacked off at training, so the coach put me in the forward line, we were a very bad team, rarely scored against the top sides. It was raining full on all match.

Worst AFL game been to, I think it was 1994 Adelaide Vs Brisbane, around about then anyway was real wet.

Hawthorn V Brisbane in 2004 at th MCG.

Not sure what the exact weather was but i remember it was one of the coldest days in Melbourne history. It was the same day as that Geelong Freo game that some other people have mentioned.
Yep, pissed down with rain, the wind was quite strong, i umpired that day and was scheduled to do back to back games, we sent 2 other umpires out for the 2nd game, took forever to get the feeling back in the hands

But yeah one of the coldest days in melbourne and quite a few cases of hypothermia in footy games that day

But the worst weather Ive been to was Round 3 Carlton Collingwood in 2005, it was mid 30s and I was in the sun. Impossible to enjoy the footy in that heat

That was a shocking day

I have sympathy for those who braved the elements yesterday. 'Twould have been foul.

I was at the Freo-Richmond game some have previously mentioned - I took my old man (in his 70s) and his old school chum who was over from Perth - big Freo supporter, never been to the MCG before - exciting day coming up!

6 degrees, howling gale, monsoon, Freo slaughtered - I don't think he's spoken to my old man since.

Probably been mentioned, 1993 St.Kilda Vs Brisbane at Waverley - some of the worst and most dangerous weather you are likely to see in any sport.
