Fevola to Brisbane and all of the disharmony that resulted from it. Look like being a bottom 4 side when the drafts will be compromised.

We at Fremantle have made heaps of mistakes at the trade table so this is not having a go in a na na na na naa way. I just think the over-all effect of this one had bigger ramifications than most.

North pretty much got Wayne Carey for a bag of potato chips ($10k), Sydney recruiters woulda been kicking themselves.

Does this count as a trade? It was a token offer after they made a trade for longmire.

This is one of the best posts in BigFooty history, from former Richmond mod Weaver that I'd like to share.

Worst trade ever?

That's easy. Pick 16 and 46 for Stephen O'Reilly who played 12 games for you. AND you had to pay him illegally outside the cap. AND he blew the whistle on you. AND you had to pay a fine. AND you got kicked out of the draft and had to recruit hacks. AND it meant that your mulit-million investment in Denis Pagan was a waste because he had no players.

Stephen O'Reilly for - Pick 16, pick 46, $1m fine, pick 1, 2, 17 and 33 in the 2003 draft, pick 1 in the 2003 PSD, 1st and 2nd round picks in the 2004 draft.

I reckon that would have the McMahon trade covered by a couple of laps of Flemington, then a trip down the highway for a run round Caulfield, before a backtrack to run the length of the Moone Valley straight.

Having shared that, the McMahon trade turned out to be an absolute shocker. The more I think about it, the more I can't believe it happened for pick 19. Although Terry explained it last year - he signed a heads of agreement with the Doggies for pick 35, but then Miller went and traded 35 for Morton. Thus, we folded and gave up 19 for McMahon. Terrible, terrible stuff.

Re: Stephen O'Reilly

TBH most of that wasn't due to the trade, it was due to the administration at the time being complete idiots (Carlton's admin that is). They played with fire and got severely burned, and we as fans had to watch our dearly beloved football side slide into an imposed mediocrity.

According to Terry Wallet
Tony Lockett to Sydney for pick 5[Joel Smith].

Personally i think it was a Win/Win for both clubs and Lockett.

Barking up the wrong tree again Terry.

No where near it. Sydney made GF a year later and Saints made GF the year after that. Win/Win that one.

But Saints were involved in worst trade ever. Ian Stewart for Billy Barret.

Cost us at least the 1971 flag and probably a crack at another in 72/73.

The worst trade ever that I can recall..was after Lynch accepted the Brisbane offer, Fitzroy was in the market for a full forward and offered Richmond, Broderick & Gale for Hogg & Lambert... Like many other Roy supporters at the time I wasn't to keen on that deal ....

What happened next, would have to have be, if not, the worse deal would run close to...Lambert, on hearing of the deal, had a massive dummy spit and refused to be part of the trade..Telling Richmond he'd decide where he was going..ending up at Brisbane. One would have thought Fitzroy would have walked away from the deal.. but instead they compensated Richmond for their loss and gave Broderick, Gale & Dundas just for Hogg... That's got to be the worse ever....Worse for Fitzroy, was Hogg did nothing

I count it as a trade, because Sydney had first dibs on Carey.

But what that does show is that the culture of North is so rotten that the only way they have achieved success in the modern era is to be lucky enough to recruit the greatest player ever, via an extremely lucky trade.

Doesn't bode well for your future seeing as those sort of player/trade combinations will probably never happen again.

anyway, on with the thread.
The stephen O'reilly one is the worst trade ever.

I suspect that trade was partly driven because at that stage Fitzroy couldnt afford to pay for all 3 of Broderick, Gale & Dundas.

There have been times such as Fitzroys death throws, Sydney in the early 90's and Brisbane Bears in the early 90's where other clubs have been able to poach mercilessly. Not sure if its fair to count those days in a "worst trade ever" thread, as those 3 clubs didnt have a choice.

The thing that kills me about Wallace trading pick 19 for Jordan Mcmahon is that he was that one the gave up pick 10 for him originally at the Bulldogs wasn't he? Now fair enough not all first round draft picks work out (just ask Hawthorn) but rather than leave that mistake behind to then trade for him was laughable.

Lovett for pick 16, on traded for Mark Williams. Has to be one of the worst in recent times. The infamous Veale Deal was cursed and no one really came out on top, but at least the players involved played some games. Aside from Williams' blink-and-you've-missed-it cameo early last year that's two clubs giving up a first round pick for nothing.
