Hawthorn get pick one for Trent Croad and Luke McPharlin. Fremantle end up losing Trent Croad who goes back to Hawthorn.

Therefore Fremantle traded the number one pick for Luke McPharlin. In 2001 when the draft was considered the ultra draft, that was pretty dumb. Not sure who Fremantle would have picked if they had pick one but I would have Luke Hodge, Chris Judd, Luke Ball or Jimmy Bartel over Luke McPharlin any day of the week.

Brisbanes Fevola trade has prob made the biggest impact to any club.

Crows trading pick two (Daniel Wells) for Wayne Carey when he was 31 in 2002 was pretty dumb as well.

Carey was just the steak knives of the deal too.

Yes, Longmire was the main course, and who knows how good he would have been if not for his wretched knees? A Coleman Medal and B & F at 19, is testament to his ability and he's still the youngest player to ever win the Coleman.

What about

Pick 36 (Mark LeCras) for Chad Morrison (noob player who cost Pies 250k sponsorship deal)

Morrison was an absolute stud until the H-Bomb of injury blew him apart at just 22.

Rockabilly..alll night long....Rockabilly....show the boys what he's all about.....Rockabilly...make the girls scream and shout.....Rockabilly's such a haaaandsome maaaan.

saints have had a fair few in their time.

in recent times i think we got schneider/dempster at a pretty good pick. charlie gardiner/king for a very late pick. king is now our ruck coach, got very good service out of him.

did we trade for monkhaust? what did we get for the winmar to doggies trade.

Oh come on wouldn't Hawthorn want McPharlin back and the others just like like Juddy would have returned to Victoria as soon as soon as possible. Luke has now shown he is an elite 200 game key position player that would fit into any club. Not only is he talented but he is durable and loyal what more can you ask. We at Freo are very happy with the end result 10 years on.

Jesus this has been done to death.

We never had Mitchell or Hodge on our list. How the hell could we trade them?
Poor work I guess for trading an early pick in a strong draft but who knows, Hodge may have played average and wanted to get traded back to Victoria? Mitchell was a great selection at that pick. We did dumb things but its not if we had these players and traded them off. It was good drafting by the clubs when we traded good picks. Just in hindsight it looks poor. Captain Hindsight would tell you all about it. Happy with what McPharlin has done for us, of course Croad was a fail move by us.

We also did let players go whom went on and did some good things for their clubs, once again it may have been the spark of getting traded that may have sent them into playing good football and being at a successful club probably helped too.

Rant over.

By the way, yes we did stupid things with our picks its just people don't look at it in depth enough just on the surface. Poor drafting early on I'm glad its finally changed.

I suspect that trade was partly driven because at that stage Fitzroy couldnt afford to pay for all 3 of Broderick, Gale & Dundas.

There have been times such as Fitzroys death throws, Sydney in the early 90's and Brisbane Bears in the early 90's where other clubs have been able to poach mercilessly. Not sure if its fair to count those days in a "worst trade ever" thread, as those 3 clubs didnt have a choice.

Disagree Doc Jolly..No escaping it.. Those times were indeed the clubs darkest days..The fact remains, they were bad trades.
If money was the issue.. they had the option to simply delist players..they didn't have to go through with the trade...
Cant and shouldn't wipe out part of history to suit an arguement....Whether it was fair or not is irrelevant...It's equally unfair not to count them now and sweep it under the carpet as though it never happened.. Goes hand in hand with the reminders of handouts and premierships..

locketts trade can never be the worst, he wanted out of stkilda they didnt have much choice. To be the worst trade surely it needs to be where a club gave someone the boot for nothing and it bites them in the backside

actually that was a very good trade for fremantle at the time.

they needed talls desperately. were going to take polak #1, and stole McPharlin from Hawthorn by using the threat of the PSD to get him free, and so got him for pick #20

at the time, getting Croad (who looked a superstar at the time) and McPharlin and Polak was a huge effort.
