Stephen O'Reilly from Carlton to Freo for - Pick 16 and 46, $1m fine, pick 1, 2, 17 and 33 in the 2003 draft, pick 1 in the 2003 PSD, 1st and 2nd round picks in the 2004 draft.

What a classic.

Next worse Lloyd for Tod Ridley

This whole assumption that if the Blues hadn't picked up Stephen O'Reilly, they wouldn't have been done for the salary cap is nonsense imo. The old Elliot regime was bound to come crashing down at some stage, as happened in the rest of his life. Stephen O'Reilly ended up being traded for Brendan Fewster and Adam Butler. Hardly a massive pwning for the Dockers.

Did we Trade Franklin for Tambling?

It's bloody stupid isn't it? I wish people would realise that we ourselves took Roughie over Buddy as well.

Interesting aside, I bailed up Gary Buckenara at a Hawks function a few months back and asked him about what happened that trade week.

He said (from memory), that AC told him quite early on that he wanted talls that draft but they also heavily wanted Tambling to complement Hodge. He also said that Richmond assumed that you would get Roughie as we would take Tambling with our first pick (#2) - to the point that Roughie went to some Richmond players barbecue a few days before draft day and Tambling was put up by Bucky at his house when he came down for trade week.

He also said that the recruiters were all wary of Buddy (apparently his interviews didn't go well at all). In the end we took Roughie first and gambled that Buddy would still be there at 5 as the only way we could think of to grab both of them. It was interesting just to see the games we played with Tambling to throw other clubs off the scent of what we're doing.

very arguably. table thumping arguably.

wasn't best player in his position, during his playing career.

You best be trolling. There's a definite case for about a dozen footballers above him, but to label a call like that contentious is contentious in itself.

All trades involving Justin Murphy. Trainwreck material.

1. Traded to the Blues in 1995 (the Tigers picked all spuds that year). Murphy develops into a quality, exciting player.

2. Carlton trades Murphy to Geelong for pick 11 at the end of 2000. A steal for the Cats! Carlton /the pick on Trent Sporn. Murphy spends the season - a year of infamous petulance - playing with little interest and plenty of selfishness.

3. Geelong, disgusted, trades Murphy BACK to Carlton THE NEXT YEAR for pick 23. This pick leads to their long and illustrious love affair with Charlie Gardiner.

4. Meanwhile, Murphy is now such a invisible CANCER that Carlton now dupe Essendon into the fun. Murphy now = one Cory McGrath, it seems. Actually, that's about right.

And what did Essendon have to say about him? Despite 2004 being "outstanding" according to the website, "He did not find the same form in 2005 and was delisted".

Here endeth the lesson.

Freemantle win this thread.

My favorite is the Tarrant/Medhurst trade. Get rid of Tarrant who was useless then, get Medhurst who goes from being a dud to AA, whilst we also use the pick we get from the deal to draft Nathan Brown who did the job in last years GF. To tip things off 4 years later we get Tarrant back as a much improved defender for nothing more than a packet of chips.

Also honorable mention for the James Clement trade. Whatever we gave up to get him wasnt much and he ends up being one of our all time great defenders. Lol Freemantle

If Crow-mo is referring to Dunstall, then I would have to agree with him. Dunstall IMO was the equal of Lockett as a FF...and what's more, was a great team player. Hence IMO, he was a better player.

Many players back in those days rated Dunstall ahead of Lockett. Both great players and an argument can be made for both and not be wrong. Definitely not a troll though.

Pick 14 (Jack Grimes) to Melbourne
Travis Johnstone to Brisbane
Cameron Wood to Collingwood

Here's a notable Demon one recently

Bill Barrott for Ian Stewart still wins.

Ian Stewart goes on to win a Brownlow at Richmond. Barrott goes on to play 2 games for St Kilda.

What year did Stewart win his Brownlow? That's right - 1971 - when the Saints lost a close GF after leading at 3/4 time. Do you reckon having an extra Brownlow medallist in the team may have helped?

However, recently Richmond traded Brad ottens to geelong for Pick 12 and 16. Sounds about right - except Pick 16 was Pattison (urrgh) and Pick 12 was Meyer (ah ha ha ha ha that's not funny).

indeedy.

1999- Collingwood trade pick 3(Mathew Pavlich went at pick 4 and Collingwood had invested a fortune on tracking his progress pre draft) for a dud Richmond ruckman, Steve McKee and pick 6.

They wasted pick 6 on another dud, Danny Roach who played 1 game with the stats of 0 kicks, 1 free kick, 1 handball).

Hard to beat!!!!

Always thought that was a dreadful deal as we gave up our second best player in Paul Williams who went on to win 2 Sydney B&fs, in order to gain a draft pick to facilitate that deal.

Clement was never going to win us a flag, but in 2002, Williams may have.

I didn't know that collingwood were tracking him, but its not a surprise. however, they effectively gave up on him because he was never getting to #6.

and of course, they had #1 and chose to take fraser instead

In fact, Collingwood were not sure who to use pick 1 on, Fraser or Pavlich. I can't blame them picking Fraser as he was highly rated as a junior, but clearly Pavlich has always been a mile in front of him at AFL level.

Why the hell they traded away pick 3 for a dud like McKee to me is the one of the worst calls in AFL history, particularly given that Pavlich was there for the taking as Freo(pick 2) had decided on Haselby.

not sure that is a fact. Fraser had been the most highly touted young player in the country for 2 years. if he'd been eligible, he'd have gone #1 in 1998

if they were tracking him, they didn't like what they saw because he was theirs and they still turned their nose up at him.

During trade week 2003, the Dogs picked up Stephen Koops from Freo for pick 19, which turned out to be David Mundy. During that trade week Peter Rohde also decided to splash out on Peter Street for pick 20, Adam Morgan for pick 35, and Jade Rawlings for pick 6 and PSD pick 1. I know Crazy Vossy has been pilloried for his trade week shenanigans a couple of years ago but surely Peter Rohde's trade week in 2003 was worse.
