No.
He wasn't interested in leaving SA long-term. Anyone from elsewhere would have got the 1st 2 years then would have had to gamble on changing his mind.

Yes. He did - he made it abundantly clear he would walk if taken by any team outside of SA.

Liam Jones for the pick that turned out to be Caleb Daniel.
Looks like a win-win now. Can't really put much stock in the 'trade win value' of non-top 30 picks tho. Dogs might have taken Daniel earlier if they didn't have the later pick/might have traded for another pick if they thought they might need it for Daniel, and by that stage of the draft the Blues might not even have been into Daniel.

Port gave up pick 1 and 24 for Ian Downsborough

A bit like the Freo-Lloyd situation, Port didn't "give up" those picks, they were compo picks allocated to us for losing an uncontracted player.

In return for Port agreeing to take Downsborough which ensured that we'd get the #1 pick ahead of Essendon and the other sides entitled to compo, we agreed to give them Brayden Lyle and Shane Bond for pick 57.

One of the worst deals of the 90s (or best deals, from our point of view), was Sydney giving up pick 1 in 1992 for Scott Watters and Tony Begovich.

Collingwood sending Brisbane pick 14 for Cameron Wood is still an interesting one

Robbie Tarrant, Harry Taylor, Alex Rance and Callan Ward were four of the next five selections and this was in Derek Hine's peak recruiting period. What could have been...

Pies could be in running for worst trade this year- current Sydney Cat B rookie Murray for 2018 second rounder. Nathan Wilson went for about the same. What the hell are Pies doing?

Not a good trade on face value but good of you to be impartial and omit the other picks coming our way in the deal.

The Wilson trade was a bargain for Freo, not many players of his quality go for so low. I’d say GWS lost that more than we lost this trade.

It was the right decision at the time. We needed a ruckman to win a premiership and paid up for a young talent. Three years later we had the ruckmen we needed (he wasnt one of them, we picked up Leigh Brown then Jolly in subsequent seasons) and we won the flag.

Picks? A third rounder to show impartiality? Wowee!!

So a 2nd rounder is everything, but a 3rd rounder and 4th rounder combined aren't worth mentioning? Lmao.

We got Murray, a future 3rd (say 52ish) and a 4th rounder (Pick 70) back. Using the points as a guide, at worst that's Murray & a mid-3rd rounder for a future 2nd rounder.

Like I said - not great on face value but that's what the deal was. Maybe get a clue before posting, or at least do the research.

Suggest you try defending this trade on your own board. They are not happy!!

I'm not happy either lol. Just pointing out that the trade was more than you posted.

Murray has to become a solid AFL player & Pies need to finish no lower than 12th for this trade to be worth it. Time will tell on both counts. It's hardly as shocking a trade as some are making out though.

...anything the Bulldogs did during trade period 2017.

Reckon we made out ok. Another top 20 pick and a former pick 2 in.

Lost stringer but by no means awful

Times like this you just have to remember the greatest post ever on big footy. Which also happens to be the worst trade ever

Worst trade ever?

That's easy. Pick 16 and 46 for Stephen O'Reilly who played 12 games for you. AND you had to pay him illegally outside the cap. AND he blew the whistle on you. AND you had to pay a fine. AND you got kicked out of the draft and had to recruit hacks. AND it meant that your mulit-million investment in Denis Pagan was a waste because he had no players.

Stephen O'Reilly for - Pick 16, pick 46, $1m fine, pick 1, 2, 17 and 33 in the 2003 draft, pick 1 in the 2003 PSD, 1st and 2nd round picks in the 2004 draft.

I reckon that would have the McMahon trade covered by a couple of laps of Flemington, then a trip down the highway for a run round Caulfield, before a backtrack to run the length of the Moone Valley straight.
