The Worst Trade Ever

The Lions giving up picks for Hodge who was free since they have the first pick in the preseason draft is the worst by far since they paid for something they could of got for free.
A 1 pick downgrade and a pick they weren't likely to use, basically paid nothing.

Abbott vs Turnbull was probably the worst trade ever.

I wanted Abbott to stay on to the point he created a civil war, ultimately leading up to tearing the rich out of their homes like they did to Russia and burning down churches. Australia needs Tony.

Not really when you struggle to hold blokes at your club and someone actually wants to play for you

if thats the dire reality then theres a strong argument your club isnt even viable....

Looking for positives re: Gold Coast...

atleast they got a player who wants to be there?
And for them right now- that is worth pick 2. I wouldn't have done it, personally, but putting value in attracting players isn't a bad idea.

They have to start somewhere in building a culture that retains players, Weller is young enough and will develop faster than the #2 pick would have in the near future and who knows, has potential to be as good.

Who did Freo pick up for pick 1 back in 2001?

They got Trent Croad and Luke McPharlin for 1, 35ish and 50ish.

Netted Hodge and Mitchell for the Hawks who eventually got Croad back after he failed for Freo.

At the time, it was a massive trade and Croad was a gun young forward in a prelim final Vic team. Freo were coming off the Wooden Spoon.

Freo also had a priority pick (4) which they used on Polak, by all reports they rated him the highest either way, hence pick 1 was in play.

The top 6 of 2001 draft was pretty tight - Hodge was projected as low as 5, Polak as high as 3 (WCE, took Judd).

So while it definitely burnt Freo, it was a calculated punt rather than a horrendously bad deal at the time.

And he’s got a brother!

They paid way overs but when a player nominates your club for the first time in its history you don’t muck around.

Plus they got an extra 2018 first round from the eagles to make up for the shortfall

Weller will jump ship in a few years, anyway. Hilarious stuff by GC.

I doubt that - if you are thinking St Kilda is a lure then I doubt his brother will last another few years anyway.

He's there's for good.

The question is whether he delevops into their best player - pretty much what they paid and are paying for.
