nostalgia is indeed a timeless thing. Back in the day there were oral yarns, songs, festivities, folklore, trinket keepsakes, family photos, wars/famines/plagues, people tended to live their lives more locally, etc. and without modern distraction and instant answers nostalgia would’ve held some power, particularly if away from a homeland

I just think some people simply have better memory than others and more idiosyncratic sentimental attachments. Those that don’t will tend to uncritically parrot the broadstroke framing of pop culture as if they downloaded a backstory yesterday. You often see it around this time of year, relatives (when probed) with no memory of things unless it has been subsequently related ad nauseam.

Nostalgia has previously been diagnosed as a mental disorder but it was a blurring of homesickness and a desire for different better times

It's evolved into its current meaning: a fondness for objects or experiences of the past

2000s alcohol ads were great. Cougar, Jim Beam, Carlton Draught, Hahn Premium Light all got in on the action. The Toyota Hilux ads were in the same vein.

Now we live in a time where people are offended by ads that are clever and well made but sports betting ads being woven into the coverage of sports is somehow OK.

Jayden Stephenson is a great example of how hypocritical the AFL are when its comes to betting and sponsorship revenue. Ads promoting it on every medium even during games but a kid gets caught falling victim to their trap and gets hung, drawn and quartered

It's a joke.

The saturation of betting is absurd these days yet "gamble responsibly" is everywhere.

Money talks loudest though.

I'd love to get another 5 disc turntable. Do they still sell those?

Sure do.

I still have a CD player. Still use it every weekend too. Didn't realise it had become an old bastard thing, but I guess it makes sense. Kind of snuck up on me I suppose, cos I'll still buy a handful of CDs every year as well. Although 15 years ago I might've bought at least a CD a week - which is why I have a vast collection that I never got rid of - now I might buy 1 CD a month at the very most.

I have a bunch of CDs from random indy artists that pre-dated the digital era. There are a handful of really great albums that have deleted songs in the more socially progressive age. And it just sounds better than Apple music through a HomePod.

About a decade ago I very seriously considered converting as much as I could to vinyl. Pretty glad I didn't do it though, weighing cost, use, and the dedication of quite a bit of space in a 1br apartment, it wouldn't have been a good purchase.

We had our Christmas celebration lunch today at my retirement village. A group of teens led by their teacher played Christmas songs. I remember back when I used to make fun of instances like this, not really thinking what my future would bring. At least I still have my own teeth so I could chew the turkey and ham.

My old car had a CD player but now I don't own one. Got about 200 of the things but don't really just want to dump them at a second hand store. I still listen to radio or podcasts in the car but at home it's Alexa or vinyl.
