Im 35 and i know what a winged keel is (in the sense that i know it was a design to sailboat that won an americas cup). I also have no interest in sailing whatsoever but pop culture wise it was a "moment"... Still dont really know why but alas.

I’m 41 and can’t figure out why the Americas Cup was such a big deal either

It's actually hard to explain because quite literally nothing like that has ever happened again.

Australia II winning the America's Cup in 1983 was one of the biggest underdog victories in the history of sport ending the New York Yacht Club's 132 year winning streak, that could never be replicated again. Now the America's Cup changes hands just about every time it is run and no one cares.

i guess it would have been like, maybe, if the socceroos in the 2006 didnt get knocked out by italy and that team made it to the final perhaps

even thats not a good analogy as soccer is kinda well followed, compared to yachting

hmm, im sure someone else can think of an analogy

maybe the suns going undefeated this coming season

If Australia won the curling gold and everyone just got onboard with the little battlers usurping the Scandinavian stranglehold with a new broom and sliding technique?

Just the term 'winged keel' shows our age. We're of the around the same age and were just old enough to get caught up in the Australia 2 phenomenon. Ask anyone even 40 what a winged keel was and they'd have no idea.
part of that is because that they are not very common these days

winged keels are tricky because you are trading off an increased wetted surface for optimised hydrodynamics - but optimised only at a specific angle of attack (since keels don't have adjustable chord lines - i.e. no ailerons/flaps). So they can be very fast - but only in very specific situations, when designed extremely carefully, and sailed as designed by a very good sailor

they do have some advantages in lowering vcg which made them popular on shallow-draft cruising boats for a while, but these days you are more likely to see squished bulbs or twin keels instead

I can assure you that amongst the masses (read those of us who know Sweet FA about sailing) that is not the case.

I know the term Winged Keel but if you showed me the underside of 10 different boats, yachts, whatever i couldnt tell you which is the winged one.

I think even the most avid sailing fan probably needs to accept that outside of that Amercias Cup triumph (wouldnt even know when its on now) and the olympics (when Slingsby and co net us a bunch of medals) very very few people in the real world know a ****ing thing about sailing.

I'm now picturing Caesar like this

I dunno, sailing has been a growth sport in recent years

Admittedly it depends a fair bit on where you live, not a lot of clubs in Dubbo
Think every sport says its a growth sport. Ultimately sailing just isnt accessible to a massive swathe of the population, im tipping even with a huge growth rate it would still be a tiny fraction of the market share to bigger and more accesible sports.

Im a sports NUT will watch pretty much anything competitive, i got wildly into the curling at the winter olympics a few years back, i can safely say i would have seen about 15 minutes of sailing highlights total in my life, im tipping there are alot more people like me than you would think.

Bent over this morning to put some washing into front loader. Sharp pain in lower back unlike anything i have ever experienced. Collapsed on the floor in pain. Was home alone but luckily had my phone in pocket. Rang ambulance and was taken to hospital.

Have had direct injection to the site and been on endone and other painkillers. Pain has dropped a little from 9-10s to 7-8s.
Was admitted and monitoring it overnight. See how it is tomorrow. Hopefully better or a scan/ultrasound or mri will show what tf is going on.

Dont get old kids.

How did ambos get into the housing property

I've had the odd sharp pain in the lower back and I found the best cure was to lie on the couch with a few beers and watch cricket or football.

After a couple of days of that I am usually right to go, it's not even that much of an inconvenience as that is probably what I would be doing anyway.

Sorry to hear that. But getting old is still better than the alternative.
