A bit sad when people actually want a guy to fail. Unless of course the guy is a prick, which Hayne does not fall into that category. Of course the media go over the top but that was always going to happen. He's one of Australia's most high profile athletes, trying to crack it in one of the biggest sporting leagues in the world. He generates headlines and people are genuinely interested.

Have seen him around a few Eastern Suburbs (Sydney) nightspots over the years and he has always had time for fans and never a drama posing for a picture or signing something.

Not having a go at your rough edges, because there are a lot that fall into the category, and some of the shit I've read over the net has been nothing but downright vitriolic. The balls it takes to let go of a monster contract in a sport that you can dominate, to take a plunge into the deep unknown.... Very few people on the planet could do that.

A lot of people haven't heard of Nathan Fyfe.
Anyone that follows sport would have. I hate rugby with a passion, but I know the likes of Billy Slater, Beau Ryan (thanks to his hilariousness on the footy show) and JT, but had never heard of Hayne before this NFL gig.

yeh

no doubt it is harsh me wanting a bloke to lose his job just because im sick of hearing about him in the media

a selfish thought, but must say my spirits were lifted when i heard he was on the way out on the 9am news bulletin on the way into work this morning.

If it's possible for a sports follower not to know Hayne, then it's possible for a sport follower to not know Fyfe. Hayne has won the Brownlow equivalent twice in rugby league so he is a big name in the code. But a lot of non-RL people won't know Hayne, just as a lot of non-AFL people won't know who Fyfe is.

yeh i only know the popular melbourne guys

id never heard of the bloke (whos name escapes me) that had won 4 equivalents of the brownlow until he won it this year

really surprised me that i'd never even heard of him. considering i listen to SEN a lot (admittedly only in AFL dominated periods) i dunno how i couldve avoided it

Im sorry, but you said he was one of Australia's most high profile athletes. If 3 quarters of the country doesn't know who he is does that really apply?

By your logic, three quarters of the country wouldn't know who Nathan Fyfe is.

Hayne is the equivalent of Fyfe in rugby league. Actually, they are almost on an identical level. They've both won the official player of the year (Hayne twice - 2009 and 2014), both played in grand finals, both been picked for Australia or in the All-Australian team. They would both be on similar level of pay, think reports where Hayne was on about 800K when he left Oz.

Just because you don't follow a sport, and you don't know a player, doesn't mean they aren't high profile. I could walk around Sydney today and a huge chunk of people wouldn't know who Nathan Fyfe is. But Fyfe is still one of Australia's highest profile sportsmen.

Yeah Hayne was a pretty big deal in rugby league, played for NSW and Australia, surprised people wouldn't have heard of him prior to his NFL career.

I got a bit sick of the media here reporting on his every move over there but that wasn't his fault and by all reports he's a nice guy so it's hard to hate him.

save to say this is not an issue i've ever come across.

my thoughts on people as I moved into FT work has generally worked its way to "im going to hate them".

When you spend 5 days a week, 8 or 9 hours a day with the same people in a full time office job even the nicest people can get on your nerves.

Hayne chucked in his lot at the top of one sport to have a go at another one which he'd never played before, and made it. It's hard not to admire that, ignore the hype.

Yeah there aren't too many pro sportsmen that would have the balls to do what he's done, most would just cruise along in the sport they are elite at.
