Just took the dogs for their daily walk down the local park. There is a man made lake there and it is populated with at least a dozen longneck turtles including babies. There's a big sign next to the shore saying dog swimming prohibited. Anyway, I see these 3 people having a great time letting their 2 kelpies swim out into the lake and back again multiple times.. right next to the sign.

Woman: Dogs can't read.
Me: Yeah but you can. That lake is full of turtles.

Even if it's a shared area, isn't it your responsibility to look after/control your dog?

You may know your dog to be friendly, but other people who don't know you or your dog may not be aware of the temperament of your dog

And before your dog gets involved, do you talk to these groups of people to ask if they mind or just assume it would be ok? Because I don't blame people for getting shitty if they're enjoying their time on the beach, such as with a game of cricket, and then some random dog unexpectedly or unknowingly just gets involved

There are plenty of beaches - like, 90% of them - where dogs aren't allowed off leash. Play cricket on one of those.

It may also be that those playing cricket are tourists & the beach was practical to where they're staying, it could be locals who are enjoying their local beach etc

No one's saying not to have your dog off leash, just that it may be best to check in with others who are already partaking in an activity, rather than assume they won't mind & then getting shitty if they do

What you're essentially telling dog owners is that they can have this tiny proportion of beach as a percentage of total beach area, and you want them and their dogs to be second class citizens there too.

You go to a dog beach, you expect the dogs to be excitable, playful and off the show. Don't go to an off-leash dog beach if you aren't prepared to deal with it. The next beach is typically 2 minutes down the road.

Owner didn't see the problem or apologise for his dog gouging a hole in my foot with his untrimmed nails.

The worst rage I ever had was a cyclist hooning through the off leash park, nearly hitting a dog, not slowing down, then hitting a kid and sending her flying.

Id already had a bad day - I lost my friggen mind, booted the shit out of this guys chain rings, and the whole group set exploded. As he sheepishly bent down to pick them up, terrified I was going to knee him in the face, my dog started pissing on bike parts.
