Just driving down the main highways and freeways in Victoria is enough to stuff up anyone’s tires as they’ve been neglected for 10 years.

Although sometimes they’ll send out someone to put out warning signs and lower the speed limit around the worst patches, then leave them there for years and not fix…
Yeah.
Over heard a guy talking about the roads he reckons they use cheap stones and should be using a better stones.
heaps of other things I can't remember.
But , I think he had a point .

Yeah stop and go leave up signs all the time they so lazy .

I'll have to keep an eye 👀 on my front passenger tyre I pumped up yesterday.
I'm not surprised because I've been down some rough roads.off the beaten track.

That describes any main road in the Geelong region

Our local roads are in better condition than the main roads - a local road that is genuinely a residential street, if there's a car parked on the side of the road then only 1 car can pass at a time type thing, no major traffic and not much more than 200m long, recently got fully resurfaced and no idea why

Yet the main drags are in totally shit condition

I did traffic control for a few months a few years back - I remember chatting with an experienced driver one day and he said that a lot of the time they they do patch repairs, it's done knowing the time frame of when they'll be back out in X-years to do them again because they know the manner in which the roads are being repaired won't last

So it's essentially a circuit they work on with the patch repairs because and a repeat job they can lock in for a couple of years down the track

FFS now Control V seems to have defaulted to "paste values"
do what you do cant stop wont stop GIF

I had the front passenger down to 23 the other week, but couldn’t remember the last time I’d actually pumped them up, haven’t checked again since but hoping it’s not the tires as they’re not that old and they have plenty of tread.

But interested to know what sort of kms people get out of their tires? I’m 99% sure I’ve only replaced the tires on this car once and I got over 100k on them. But previous cars used to be about 60-70k.
I had only done 35,000km in ten years but with the problem I had with one tyre I considered it was time for a new set. I didn't want to buy just one tyre. The other tyres didn't look too bad otherwise.

Looking for cars. I don't like the process
Yeah same boat. MG looked to be good for the price then a few people told me "they're cheap for a reason", likewise Haval which look good for the price. I'm not into cars either which doesn't help.

Pickles auctions look cheap? Not that I've had a good look at that

My old VE Commodore runs fine but looks like shit. Be a cosmetic upgrade as much as anything so no rush!

I'm looking for a 4x4 as I want to do more fishing and kayaking and my sedan is useless for that.

Next 12 months looking to learn reversing trailers and to do more outdoors stuff.

I think a Navara is in my range

Go a Hilux if you can. Even the mid 2010s in diesel are still pretty bulletproof. Although anything Toyota is cheaper to but new at present. :tearsofjoy:

It’s realllll shorthand and there are exceptions, but you can apply these rules and not go too far wrong.

Chinese brands = shit

Japanese / Korean brands = good

European brands = some good, many very shit, all hideously overpriced. Most of the cars put out by these brands are actually now built in Eastern Europe, Mexico, South Africa or cheap Asian countries.

(Just make sure you get the above correct - for example some people think MG is still British, the brand was sold to the Chinese ages ago)

In good news we are in a golden age of information, check out YouTube, there are so many owners out there who document their experience with their cars

Stick to the owners reviews and second-hand info because you’ll learn about reliability etc. Most new car reviews these days are little more than paid advertorial PR shit.

Hope that helps.

Yeah I got the darl a little Captiva off an auction site for 5k with 98,000 on the clock about 4 years ago and it hasn’t missed a beat. Perfect for school drop offs, shopping etc and keeps the kms down on the good cars. Plenty of diamonds in the rough if you have time and patience

We had an MG but it got written off.

For $30k it was OK, but there were functionality issues which we didn't notice until after we'd owned it for a bit.

Ended up getting a Tucson and yeah it was $20k more but the difference in price point is well worth it.

TBH I was one of those who was pleased at the resurgence of British Motoring and the new MGs being out and about on the roads.

It was only when I started work for one of the import yards that I realised a) they weren't British and b) the label inside the petrol cap identifying it as being from the Shanghai Automotive Industrial Corporation showed its true origins and c) quality control was nonexistent, you got a working one or you got a nightmare. The HS and the ZS weren't too too bad, but the MG3 and the plug-in hybrids were a dice roll.

While I was there three brand new MG3s were written off - from the factory boat on a truck, to the yard, direct to the scrappies on a flatbed. Didn't even make it to the dealer thank god.

This is so true, even with shit brands you get some people who own one for years and it never lets them down, so they then swear by it… you can’t take individual advice because there’s every chance you’ll get an absolute heap of shit.

Where you have to be very careful now is the old German prestige brands which have become plentiful on the used market. It’s not the 1980s where you paid big money for a Merc and got German design and build quality. The beancounters took over these companies decades ago. Unsuspecting people see the badge on a cheap car and still equate it with quality. They’re cheap on the second-hand market for a reason - they’re just run-of-the-mill shitters, as the last poor bastard has found out.

The biggest problem is the parts… this shit reliability is combined with absolutely criminal prices for parts, which can leave you haemorrhaging as an owner.

If you’re spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a flagship S-Class or 7-Series, you’ll get some of the old school build quality (though maintaining it will still cost you your internal organs). The cheaper cars… be very very careful.

One basic thing many people don’t check is major service items… people can be selling at a certain time for a reason… you don’t want to buy yourself a Euro shitbox only to find that the next service recommends $4000 in parts.
