Hi all,
I have never undertaken anything like this, but i am keen on having a crack at attempting a draft. So here's my list of the first 30 players.
1 - Bris Lions - Luke Davies-Uniacke
With Rockliff leaving over the off-season, the Lions need to replace him with a ready to go midfielder - LDU fits that description perfectly.
2. Fremantle - Paddy Dow
Freo have bulked up their spine recently, having acquired Logue, Mccarthy, Kersten and Hamling last year, and added outside speed with Hill, Bennell, Wilson and Matera. All they required now is inside grunt and skill. Dow adds that.
3. Carlton - Cam Raynor
Carlton need class and size in their midfield especially after the loss of Gibbs. Raynor adds that.
4. Nth Melb - Aaron Naughton
in a big surprise, Nth melb go after Aaron Naughton to add a key position defender to their ageing talls. in a draft with limited talls at the top end, Nth need some defenders that can play for the next 10 years. Naughton is that guy.
5. Fremantle - Nick Coffield
having missed out on Naughton, Fremantle decide to go for more class. Coffield can play accross HB, releasing Blakey into the midfield full time.
6. Collingwood - Jayden Stephenson
the pies require poise and class in the forward half of their side, and decide that the x-factor of Stephenson is too good to turn down.
7. St. Kilda - Aiden Bonar.
with 2 picks in a row, St Kilda have 2 tough choices to make. the thing that have held St K back for a few years is a lack of speed. Aiden Bonar adds this through their midfield. Wont play many next year, but will benefit from a full preseason in the AfL.
8. St Kilda - Charlie Constable
Really tough choice here, with Brayshaw, O'Brien and Cerra in the mix, but Constable fills their need of a marking rebound defender. can end up in the midfield, but will mop up across half back for a few years.
9. Western Bulldogs - Jack Higgins
classy small forward who will take his time in the VFL. will add to a forward line that struggled this year. will add some more desperation to a forward line that let the ball come out to easy this year.
10. Carlton - Andrew Brayshaw
inside mids, inside mids, inside mids. SOS needs to get them in and pronto. Brayshaw adds this and is the best available
11. GWS - Darcy Fogarty
Bringing Stevie J and Deledio in as classy forwards have not worked for GWS in the last 2 years, so they do what they should have done, and draft one here.
12. Adelaide- Adam Cerra
gone for the best available here, and will be licking their lips at getting Cerra. another midfielder to add after being horribly exposed in the gf.
13. WCE - Hunter Clarke
Needs to replace an aging inside midfield population. Clark adds that youth. Might not play straight away as he hones his kicking skills next year.
14. Syd - Jarrod Brander
with the likes of Franklin (not so much) and Tippett (so much) moving into the backend of their careers, Syd need some more key forward power, and Brander adds that.
15. BL - Sam Hayes
Need a key forward to replace Schache and a ruck to help Stef Martin - hayes is both. if Syd take hayes not brander, Lions would.
16. WB - Ed Richards
Classy, skillful outside mid that the Dogs need. Great kick and will work wonders outside ball winners Libba, Wallis et al.
17. Richmond - Oscar Allen
Larke Medallist who adds height to a forward line in desparate need of some more. great mark and hard when ball on the ground, will fit tigers mode of defensive pressure inside forward 50
18. BL - Joel Garner
Will be delighted he is still available. will add more class to their on ball brigade.
19. Gold Coast - Lachy O'Brien
clean midfielder who adds depth and skill to a midfield that is sorely lacking.
20. Bris - Connor Ballenden (match Richmonds bid with picks 40, 44 and 52 )
Lions match Richmonds bid of Ballenden, a tall key position player who has great hands and a great kick. They'd be silly not to match that bid. Lions finish their draft with Davies-Uniacke, Hayes, Garner and Ballanden. Great draft for them.
21. Richmond - Noah Balta
looking for more talls and Balta fits the bill. has similar attributes to Rance (marking, speed, strength), and will only get better by learning off him.
22. WCE - James Worpel
Best available, eagles need mids, and Worpel adds some more in there.
23. Geel - Matthew Ling
Outside run needed at the cats, especially out of the backline and Ling adds that
24. Nth Melb - Charlie Ballard
running tall player who can be allowed to develop on the wing or HBF.
25. Geelong - Gryan Miers
With Motlop gone, he adds speed and goal smarts to their forward line.
26. Richmond - Ryley Stoddart
With 2 talls taken, Richmond look at a mid sized project player - noones gone for Naish yet, so they are happy with this haul
27. WCE - L. Fogarty
Has fallen between the cracks, but WCE will be happy with getting him.
28. Rich - Naish (matching GWS bid)
father son pick and happy to take him here. GWS would have wanted him to replace Wilson.
29. GWS - Charlie Spargo
another small forward to add forward line pressure.
30. GWS - who cares.
