So, broomhead is better than whitfield? o_O

I'm all for getting swept up inbroomhead hype, but this seems slightly over the top, even for collingwood ! :p

Hahaha, you said swept in a broomhead thread.

I reckon the journos would be hoping Broomy develops as a player so they can 'clean up' up on some of the low-grade punning on offer. Could be the greatest bonanza since 'A Shaw Thing'.

When Broomhead was drafted Dwayne Russell was seen retreating to his bedroom with a pencil, notepad and some kleenex.

Thanks again drafted. Your insights have been very good to read. Looking forward to seeing him progress over the next few years. Sign me up for the fanclub!

At his current shape and size he's a winger first and foremost. His ability to run and run hard all day long is outstanding and his knowledge of where to run was wasted in the Port side last season. However, at Collingwood this will be a significant advantage and he will be a continuous link from defence into attack and as he streams along the wing the forwards will be licking their lips with delight at the gift he puts in front of them - the kid hits targets. Over the next two years he definitely has the ability to move into the midfield more. He has shown in many league games in the SANFL that he's capable of winning his own ball and working his way out of trouble nicely. He's got good core stability to break through tackles at that level (which will continue to develop) and his creativity to open the play up with a releasing handball or spot up kick will be very useful when he does get his chance to have a run through the middle. I see him as more of a utility player than just a high half forward who has the occasional run on the wing.

What do you see as his main weaknesses out of interest? Better to have a balanced review on him rather than all positives, or he'll be hailed as the next judd before he plays a game :p

No personal connection mate! I don't mind you asking at all! Just watched him very closely as he developed.

His biggest weakness in his game at the moment is his physical size and strength. It would be the only thing that holds him back during the year. His tackling can also let him down from time to time but again this is only due to strength, not a lack of ability or want to lay the tackle. Other than that my personal belief (and that's all it is - an opinion) is that he's more than ready to step up in every other aspect. I'd like to see him get a taste of it just after the mid season break and see him progress from there. If Didak's form drops off in the first half of the season he could certainly be in with a chance to be the replacement.

You seem to be a passionate fan of the broom drafted hawk but he only averaged 12 possessions in the seniors this year and 20 possies in the reserves. Any reason why he only averaged 12 possies? Was it due to game time? I can't see him getting a game in 2013. He is more of a long term prospect IMO.

I'd be happy if he simply became a keeper.

It seems that our drafting has been a revolving door since about 2008. The only keepers since then have been Beams, Sidebottom, Blair and Fas. And maybe Keeffe, but the lad has to start all over again coming back from injury.

It's too early to call whether any of the 2012 debutants will be keepers.

So if Broomhead ends up playing for 15 years as has been predicted, he'll be part of the greater exception than the norm.

I would agree that averaging 12 possessions a game doesn't scream 'potential super star'.

Interesting to note Robert Shaw in the latest "Inside Football":

"Tim Broomhead is super quick and agile and could be a real star if he can get his possessions up to around 20 given his talent. He can play Round 1."

I guess it will be interesting to see what the kid eventually dishes up. The other thing to remember is that forwards tend to get less of the ball. Fasolo averaged 11 disposals per game in his first season but he was an 'impact' player whose diaposals caused damage or were often goals. I'm hoping Broomhead will be a similar type of player. He seems to not waste the ball when he does get it and regularly hits the scoreboard. That at least is promising.

not sure why drafted hawk is copping clips from blokes that have never seen broomhead play.
this consensus stuff shits me.....
simlilar to another thread where someone has watched a lot of ramsey and he gets clips.....
blokes that have barely seen someone
please

Drafted Hawk is talking broomhead up as better than whitfield, i don't think anyone is really clipping him just a bit skeptical of his big claims which is pretty reasonable. I thank Hawk for coming on the board and telling us what he knows, i just don't want the kid built up too much before he starts (which is why i asked for the negative aspects to his game as well).

building someone up on bigfooty has no influence on his output

Are you referring to Blackswan re the Ramsay stuff? If so I'd say that him receiving a clip had diddly squat to do with his comments on Ramsay. It was entirely because he in turn was very harsh on Knightmare who is very well respected on this board (even if sometimes that reverence goes OTT) whose comments in and of themselves weren't deserving of a clip...

As for Drafted Hawk's comments sure they're very rich and I don't personally think there's anything wrong with that (Broomhead's the one I'm most excited about myself)! However what you've defended him for is something Drafted Hawk himself is guilty of as he admitted that he has never seen Whitfield play against men which some would have when he appeared for the AIS against Geelong VFL (I believe) at the G, a game in which he absolutely dominated.

Therefore he has made huge statements from zero knowledge base on Whitfield. For instance If we were to go off the actions of a 17 yo old against senior footballers as compared to other talented youngsters then Bryce Gibbs should be the greatest player the league has ever seen. Then compare that to a bloke like Selwood who had never played against men until 07, who would you say was more capable of mixing it with men from day dot? I'd overwhelmingly say Selwood!

FWIW it may be a technicality, but there was also another player who was underage playing in the SANFL through 2012 and that's the Crows Brad Crouch.

http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/brad-couch-in-sanfl-2012.980984/

Remember that TD's video is Crouch at 18 playing SANFL seniors for West Adelaide a team in which he was second best on ground in a Preliminary final....

Mate you can't seriously be comparing a practice match against the Box Hill Hawks reserves side with 10 games of quality performances in a league side in the SANFL surely. Tim's "stats" may not have been as high throughout the year as Whitfields in the one off trial game, but the scoring shots his stats provided his side with and the impact he had with his touches made him stand out as a player that was capable of mixing it with the bigger bodies and he showed great composure in contested situations and hit targets lace out. I realise Whitfield had lots of touches in the trial game but what I meant in my original post is it's hard to compare 10 games of league SANFL football with a one off trial game against a reserves VFL side...

Well I'm not.

The game I'm referring to was this one.

http://www.ausport.gov.au/news/ais_...my_squad_embarking_on_its_first_european_tour

The AIS-AFL Academy will play a match against Geelong Victorian Football League club as a curtain raiser to the Richmond versus Collingwood game this Saturday 16 April at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, before departing for London.

Whitfield didn't just put up good "stats" he effing dominated a match at the age of 16 that included blokes that 5 months later played in an AFL premiership (Christenson, West and Duncan) and then went onto win a VFL premiership the next season with the core of that team!

FWIW the match you're referring to was against a Box Hill Hawks senior line up that included 9 AFL listed players (including our own Clinton Young) and was one that Whitfield was OK in not dominant.

I'll back him in over a 15 year period!
Personal opinion and happy to look back on these comments in 15 years time!
Haven't seen Whitfield against MEN. Broomhead against under 18's in Adelaide this year would've just been ridiculous as it was for Grundy in the one game he went back and played during the season.

Again I have no problems with you talking up Tim. What annoys me is that you seem to be basing your opinion that Tim will be better than the clear number 1 draft choice of 2012 over an extended length of time on the fact that he has had 10 OK appearances at SANFL level (when I say OK I'm comparing to blokes like Crouch and Gibbs who were brilliant at that level for their age). When Whitfield himself has a couple of solid performances against men on his resume` that you admit you haven't seen.....

Whitfield will be better though I'm still very grateful for drafted hawks positive vibes. It creates a bit of excitement around Broomy. Besides it'll be hard to compare them for a while anyway - Broomy will battle for game time in a side bristling with Mids flankers and wings whereas Whitfield will get an obligatory rising star nomination order of Australia and Victoria cross playing with the giants

I reckon Wines will be the 'vintage crop' next year which should open the door to a virtual tsunami of stupid journalistic puns like this one
