It’s literally the worst part of the year

I've enjoyed it in the past. This year it's just blegh. Probably because we don't have great picks + are set to lose the ones we have. 2 weeks of this Tim Kelly speculation is going to be very tiresome. I'm actually finding Fremantle's moves more interesting.

Their best pickup is going to be Peter Bell.

Conversely, it's also a bit weird to dismiss 10 years of history and statistics on the basis of one draft crop which is yet to even prove itself. I'm similarly bullish on last year's draft, but to ignore poor drafts and promote good ones is obviously illogical. I don't think drafting has had this incredible change over just a few years where every pick in the 20s is amazing now.

2015 crop (perhaps the most recent we can start to make assertions about); plenty of average players in that bunch
Initial post seemed to be having a crack at our drafting. I find it a little bit weird and obviously illogical to compare what's happening now at our club with what happened 10 years ago when all of the relevant personnel have changed. Your follow-up post suggesting all draft picks in the 20-30 range are somewhat of a lottery makes more sense.

Personally I think Kelly would fit nicely into our set up. He's a nippy, goal-kicking in/out mid with good burst speed. Disposal can be suspect, but should improve with AFL level training and exposure.

Kelly will be a big uplift and if we don't improve we go backwards. I would tarde 13 if need be.

Agree with this. Can't always rely on natural development in the squad to find the necessary 5-10% improvement each year. During Hawthorn's dominant period they kept topping up with the right player; Lake, McEvoy, Frawley.

So basically win a flag rebuild is the way?

This is possibly why we have never gone back to back because of this attitude., hopefully the club has now learnt what to do to stay in a premiership window.

Agreed. Kelly is in a good age profile. For now and into the medium term (4 years). If we slide down the ladder in the not too distant future it sure does help you rebound if you’ve got existing quality on your list.

RE: the argument about mature age picks.

- Half the players at WAFL level are perennial clubman.
- A quarter of them are justified AFL rejects.

- The rest are made up of the almost good enough, late bloomers and, guys who got lost in the amateurs.

Sure you’ll draft a few at the age of 18 who end up in that second group but the quality of the AFL rejects tends towards dominating state league football if they care enough to apply themselves to the lower league.

They did command a Conca I guess

As much as I don't like to admit, he is a good move for that club.

Same. I’m guessing he’s already attempting to stamp some sort of authority by moving on Bennell.

If he’s given the opportunity he may finally make something of the club.

Much to my disgust.
