Confirmed Tim Membrey - joins Collingwood as a DFA

RIVAL clubs are monitoring St Kilda forward Tim Membrey as an unrestricted free agent option.

Membrey is coming towards the end of the three-year deal he signed at St Kilda in 2021 and has free agency status for life under AFL rules due to being delisted by his first club Sydney.

He attracted a handful of rival interest throughout last season when he was still under contract at the Saints.

However, clubs still in the market for key forward depth have retained a watchful eye over Membrey – who will turn 30 later this month – after an impressive start to the season where he has booted 12 goals from his first seven games.

Membrey has been one of the League's biggest delisted free agency success stories across the past decade, kicking 275 goals from 166 games after earning a second chance at the Saints ahead of the 2015 season.

He had previously been delisted by Sydney after managing only one game across two seasons on the club's list.

Sounds like there is a bit of interest should St Kilda and Membrey part ways at the end of this season.

Thoughts on which clubs may be a good fit?

Demons for sure. They'll have no mature Key forwards when Mcdonald & Brown retire at the end of the year except Schache & Fritsch. It's also likely Petty will leave.

Would hate to lose him.
But at his age I wouldn't begrudge him chasing more financial security for his family if another team came with a more compelling offer.

Yeah he’s been a great pickup for the club but won’t be there for our next finals tilt you wouldn’t suspect.

Can’t begrudge him getting one last decent contract and some success.

Still unsigned despite a swathe of recent signings for the Saints.

Suspect that with all of King, Caminiti, Sharman, Owens and Wood another marking option up there on the list that we’ve offered Tim a one year deal and told him we’ll be prioritising the younger guys, so he’d be very very gettable for a club willing to offer him two years.

After a very slow start to the year and then spell in the VFL, he finished the year off really strongly (including the highest rated game of his career, which came out of nowhere at the time!), so he looks like he’s still got plenty to give and could be a very worthwhile pickup for a team needing more marking power and goals up forward.

188cm 3rd tall who gets a fairly consistent 35 goals a year. A good list fit at Carlton imo as he has the potential to get off the leash if the focus is on the other talls.
I think Moir could easily kick 30+ next year but that’s if the MC think he’s ready - he’s coming a long way back with fitness because of bad injuries in his draft year

Would be a great stop gap, we have looked very good when we’ve had Martin playing in the same side as Charlie and McKay as he actually threatens defenders

Very good player but i imagine only a top 4 team takes him at his age and unsure if he would be open to moving outside vic.

if any guts in this merrett business,i wonder if membrey could be a part of it,he isnt jake stringer, but could replace half of him,the non midfield half,at least members will be paying attention and trying his ass off for the full game

He’d make a lot more sense for North than to give the older and very similar Darling multiple years.

Good fit for either the pie or the blues. Especially because he wouldn't cost anything.
Or maybe he heads up north to brissy?

Carlton get SOSOS back so possibly no need.

Essendon make an awful lot of sense if they lose Stringer.

His old club could also do a lot worse.

What about Membrey and Stringer just swap clubs. A change of environment could be good for both.
It’s probably best for Stringer to get out of Melbourne, if who he hangs around with is indeed an issue.

Otherwise, while we have ample AFL-standard options for our forward line (King, Caminiti, Sharman, Owens, Higgins, Hill, Henry and Butler- hence Skunk looking around), we could certainly do with one who can kick 40 goals, while also lining up at centre bounces when needed.

He’s kind of the opposite to Membrey.

Membrey is on the shorter side, but plays tall, whereas Stringer is a couple of inches taller, but plays more like a shorter guy, like Higgins. While also having midfield capabilities.

In their game against us recently he had a whopping 7 centre clearances!

no chance we take in someone like Stringer or Oliver.

What's the latest on this cobba? Name seems to be floated around a lot but no official links to anywhere?

Our board seems to think he's going to Essendon but I'm not sure where that's coming from. I hope he stays personally.
