Ok with thanks to Barrybran for clarifying the new pick weighing rule changes (which won't impact first round picks positions) - valuing both picks at 20 is a worst case scenario exaggeration - not a position to enter negotiations with.

Ironically makes both 1st and second round picks more valuable next year for trading (as can't just load up on 3rds anymore to match).

But due to academy picks/f/s being matched, and these picks being around 12-14 ea, they will still slide to 20 odd. It's just a fact. If you guys finish top 4 we get absolutely minced with a pick around 22.

This 'wine and dine' thing is being overplayed massively. Clubs talk to players. It doesn't immediately make a player twice as valuable because a club has approached a player in his interest in joining them. Those deals are as comparable as it gets.

But humour me - I said find ANY deal for a 29+ year old that is more than that offer. Show me any example of comparative value that makes a first rounder and a good pick upgrade a 'turd burger' of a deal. Bonus points if its a defender that has 0 AA's or any league wide awards.

Eagles owe Barrass more than the Hawks, you have a current contract with him. Make your man happy trade or give him a pay rise.

Lets get another estimation of your performance this year, as objective as possible, where people have a vested interest in their call: the bookies.
Hawks are 2nd favourite for the flag on Sportsbet, and 3rd on neds.
Lets say hawks are 3rd favourite for the flag, a reasonable trail of logic that would follow would be that 3rd on the ladder is about where its predicted youll end up, not 5/6th like I originally estimated. Pick 16
Carlton are 3rd and 5th favourites, so lets say 4th. Pick 15

Ill give you a bit of leeway on the academy kids, ill reduce that a bit. Lets only add 3 places for f/s and academies this time. Makes picks 18/19

Then carry on with the rest same as before.

No! The whole AFL world will know we offered fair compensation to the eagles for Barrass and it was rejected.

History will show we tried many different options to satisfy the eagles …. All was rejected.

We offered pick 14 in a strong draft (and a decent pick upgrade) for a 29 year old defender with no personal accolades (unless you count a B&F in a 2 win team).

A pick that high for someone of that age is a very good offer. The last 29 year old traded was Brodie Grundy - a multiple AA ruckman that would obviously improve Sydney massively - he was traded for an end of 2nd round pick. The previous 29 year old traded was Tom Mitchell (a Brownlow, MVP, AA and B&F winner) who helped Collingwood win a flag and he was traded for some nothing picks in the 40's and an average kid that couldn't get a game (and has since been delisted).

It's not a fact. Name the exact 8 players that are guaranteed to be top 12. Never has there been a draft with 8 FS academy picks in the top 20 and other than Uwland, all of bext years are still highly speculative. So that is just complete and utter horseshit.

If we finish top 4 it might blow out to 20 (but unlikely). What if we finish bottom six, as we've done every year until this year. Pick 6 with Uwland pushing it back 1 = pick 7. We get absolutely reamed. That's how future picks work.

So we should assume you and Carlton will finish bottom 6, even though you are adding 2 elite players in the position you were weakest in, and you are both top 6 favourites?
