Speculation Tom Barrass [UFA 2027] - Reportedly headed to Hawthorn

Most were expecting a 1st and second and we're fine with that. Hawks wanted to get a 3rd back, which would be close to our second, so pointless for WCE.

Looks like Hawthorn have either traded out of spite, or are working on something else to satisfy WCE.

We just have to wait to see what it is.
100% this. Clubs dont burn other clubs out of spite which in turn burns their target and negatively impacts their own team. This was strategic and not a blind side move as much as the media would like us to believe.

If it was in fact a spiteful blind side, which it isnt, WC would be very quick and within their rights to come out publicly and embarrass the Hawks for what they effectively did to Barrass, yet surprise surprise, they havent.

Yes, the narrative changed as common sense slowly began to filter through. But that was still "people". As in randoms, like us Not the AFL list managers.

We all have different views and that is what this forum is for. Personally, I thought 14 and F2 for Barrass and F3 was slightly overs but that would be OK for a contracted player. West Coast said no, and now... Who knows what will happen?
I imagine WCE would've said yes if Hawks weren't stubborn about the F3rd.

Also, you're trying to get a bloke contracted for 3 years. Obviously you need to pay over.

Hawthorn will be only giving up what was Pick 14 of value for them plus maybe change of a 3rd/4th. Which is a great deal, that will look like a future first, future second and maybe some change but maybe not.

This will be less than West Coast fans expected and wanted whilst it’s enough.
Don’t forget that is this happens WC will be giving F3 back, so hawks paying less than pick 14. Well played MM

WC fans should be happy with the Hawks trade to be honest. They were just giving overs for Baker anyway. The only difference to come from this is that Richmond will be getting a future 1st instead of 14 - which is closer to his value anyway. And regardless Richmond dont need 10 1st round picks this year, moving 1 or 2 to next year is better list management.

Perfect trade to drop on a Friday to give media content though

There is meant to be more first round academy and f/s kids. Next years draft is 100% a worse draft, if for no other reason than the bs academy kids.
The matching doesnt really affect the first round
Yes it does, Levi Ashcroft, Kako etc. Plus rule changes are in effect next seasons draft about the new matching system.

Everyone wants to be Dodo and win the trade week…

Barass is 29 and may play 3 more years of good quality?

3 x 24 = 72 h&a games.

He has averaged 17 games a year over the last 5 years, ie 51 games if he plays another 3 years.

Average pick between 11 and 20 plays 118 games.

Looking at it like this, 2 first rounders were never looked fair value….?

Look at your post, and you are accusing me at jumping at shadows.

Yes, we need future 1st for 2025 Warner attack. We all know this was planned. Reckon Richmond will be satisfied with downgrade of 3 for 6, baker and something else. This way we have that extra first for Warner, which freo don’t have.

Now back to slug fest. You guys wooed him so pay up.

There.

You guys made him feel unwanted, so much so he said good bye at your B&F 😂

Far too many haven't realised this yet

Considering the offer hasn’t yet been made with the future first, second and possible change I’d suggest it will be :)

The original 14 wasn’t enough, and a future 2nd being added was too much.
No, it doesn't seem it was 'too' much.

Hawthorn need to offer overs to get a club to release a premier KPD with 3 years remaining on his contract.

Hawks have no leverage here.

your average pick 11-20 wont play 118 quality games to the level that Barrass plays.
Hawks also offered 4 years with a trigger for a 5th. Not 3 years

Eagles blew there list up by bending over to the cats with the Kelly trade.

Good thing we're not bending over to Hawthorn then :)

Wrong. His mates at the club said he'd have no issue returning. He'd be pretty pissed with Hawthorn if they promise him the world, then try to lowball WCE.

Hawthorn don’t need leverage, it was too much and they’ve clearly worked something out with this trade to make sure both clubs are happy, but it will likely be less than what Eagles fans want. Not hard to understand.

Very untidy way of looking at though.
Barras is the stellar back man who repeals attack after attack and can be the difference between a win or a loss.
He's not some plebby HBFer

Its not going to be less than what we just rejected though

We don’t want playing “value” because contract status matters.

Negotiation is about leverage.

The Eagles rejected a straight pick 14, and a pick 14 + second for a third.

The next offer will likely be a future first and second and with change (3/4ths) if needed. Which will be better for Hawthorn with how they worked the Carlton deal, whilst West Coast will still end up happy.

For a while some people in the media were speculating about West Coast getting two firsts for Barrass. This was pure speculation and never based on any fact or precedence, but Eagles fans got their hopes up and convinced themselves it was reality. It never was.

Nope.

The vast majority of the AFL media has suggested 14 gets it done both ways with some minor details being the sticking point. A few WA based journalists suggested we'd ask for 2x first round picks for Barrass and we probably did.

Hawthorn wanting the future 3rd back is probably where the trade ended from an Eagles perspective. We've got priority access on Walley, Banfield and Evans. We need all the future picks we can get.

West Coast fans have been concerned about the basic arithmetic being Barrass for Baker, fans know this is a short-term regression in our list for no real long-term benefit. Baker being 2 years younger doesn't change the fact he's an inferior player, playing a less important position and role.

Nothing Hawthorn has done with its trade with Carlton prevents a trade getting done. Hawthorns moves have likely been to accommodate West Coast, the media stink is probably entirely in regard to how this impacts Richmond's 2024 draft hand.
