Player Watch Tom Doedee - Departed for Brisbane, End of 1st Round FA Compensation

I think he'll be better at the Lions since they'll likely not ask him to be as accountable as a defender. Will be more free to intercept and set up play.

Still would have that issue where he seems to lose his feet really easy, which is one of the worst things you can do as a defender though.

They have good key defenders... He shouldn't be playing 1v1 in their team

Probably not. Being a solid accountable mid-sized defender who can intercept is the main appeal for recruiting Doedee.

He'll just get easier assignments then minding the Max Kings of the world.

Could we do what we did with Danger and negotiate a trade instead of FA. Might get a better pick than what FA compo gets us.
Highly doubt we get better than a mid 20s pick in a trade. Not only that, similarly to B. Crouch I don't think we're all that keen to keep him, especially if it means matching a 5 year contract.

Not much incentive for Brisbane to do that.
Remind me why we traded with Danger. He was a free agent but Geelong agreed to trade I think it was due to not wanting to wait for FA. We got pick 9, Menzel and Gore and gave up Danger and pick 50.

Crows head of football David Noble said the trade provided more compensation than would have been available under free agency rules, which he said left affected clubs with little room to move.

The Cats did not lodge an offer for Dangerfield but rather went straight to a trade and it was always expected they would secure a deal early in the trade period.

Whilst Noble fumbled that, we would have been in line for pick 13 from Dangerfield compensation.

So it was a very minor upgrade.

Our best current pick is 27 (before FA compo and academy bids etc). Don't think that would be much (if at all) better than the compo pick.
Its not even that, if we said we will match a bid..there is a real risk he could say, OK, I am staying at Adelaide and I don't think thats what the club wants - so its a risk they won't run

"Adelaide would likely receive a second-round draft pick as compensation for losing Doedee through free agency."

But sure Ben McKay is worth North getting pick 3....

We really didn't want to lose Dangerfield, so we could have matched the salary, forced him to walk to the draft, and then threatened to take him in the draft anyway. We threatened as such, and rather than deal with that, Geelong just agreed to trade for Dangerfield.

By contrast, in this situation I don't think anyone would buy that we want to keep an injured Doedee badly enough to match an inflated salary. Brisbane know we'll be glad to get his salary off the books. And even if it all somehow goes belly up for them, he's injured in 2024 anyway. They'll just come back next year and take him then.

We'll posture and huff and puff about wanting a better compensation pick, but short of doing something wacky with buying out salaries etc, we won't get one, and we'll just have to accept whatever we get.

Think it was more to do with the money Dangerfield had agreed to with the Cats so as not to bust their salary cap. If we matched that would have made it hard for both the Cats and Dangerfield...;)

Of course Danger would accept less money with what he was obviously going to get by way of "öff the books" via Costa Enterprises. 💰💰💰💰💰
you are spot on here - Cats couldn't take the risk of Danger going to the draft because then they would have to pay from their salary cap what he was actually worth, rather than paying Costa Lira under the table if there was a trade

Who is going to fall over in the goal square and concede goals now?

Good riddance. Obviously had a sook about the captaincy, and to be honest, he was heading towards depth player status.

He couldn't kick, falls over like crazy, slows the play down. Maybe drank a bit of his own bathwater after his first couple of years in the seniors.

My thoughts is Tom was a good servant of the club in his time here and has earned this payday.

However, it was the right time for both parties to move on.
