There is no question this debacle had Hinkleys dirty fingerprints stamped all over it! He announced last week post match that 'Jonas will play next week' without selection committee consultation. It was Hinkleys call, there was no going back from it.

Another proof to Chris Davies and Koch, that this man is a loser with zero insight, and must go!

Hinkley is in witness protection and Chris Davies is his handler.

is he also drawing a massive salary to not do his job competently, while telling the rookie listed players on 60k to suck it up and pull themselves up by their bootstraps?
Yeah, which of us would quit a several hundred thousand a year job, we can’t do well, when the boss remembers how good we were? Jonas should never have been appointed Captain this year (or even on the list IMO), but this is all on Hinkley and others at the club lacking the guts to tell him ‘retire’. Then we can get the farewell game (not one of the next 3), done and salvage some dignity for him and club out of this. At present this is a slow motion car crash.

Agreed, real Port Adelaide people ie Big Bob McLean, Fos Williams, or Jack Cahill would have tapped Jonas on the shoulder at the end of last season, and possibly even earlier than that.

Did the playing group select him as captain ironically? Were they not aware that they are only supposed to do that for joke awards like coach or captain of the year?

Has taken over the Primus 2005 debacle as the worst Captaincy handover in our AFL history.
Wines should have been made Captain last year and continuing this year.

Jonas would have then had much less pressure on him and could go out with a bit of dignity.

The worst part is that unlike the Primus situation which genuinely could've gone either way, this year unfolding as it has for Jonas was entirely foreseeable if not likely.

Instead he goes out blasting piss in every direction.

He didn't appear to me like an on field captain. Always thought that he had enough of a task playing good footy let alone needing to lift a team. However he had some seasons being a very reliable defender for us.

The signs were there last year that he was going to struggle as a player this season. The football department are at fault. They're the mature heads that should've recognised the potential of a struggle this season regardless of what the players feel, if that was a determining factor.

Always felt like a placeholder captain to me.

Came in when Boak didn't want to do the job anymore and only should have been there until a leader in the next generation of the playing group matured - and it probably should have been Wines as soon as he won that Brownlow.

I have my reservations about Wines (the "it was a successful season in terms of win-loss" comment after the absolute bed shitting of the 2021 prelim final a standout), but at least he is still a first choice player.

I think that we should now move past wines for captain and look towards a future without Ken and the rot if the past. All 3 current players that hold the captain and vice captain roles should not hold those positions in 2024.

Wines is an imperfect option, he'd certainly be better than Jonas but Wines isn't without his baggage.

I'd be fine with a changing of the guard like what you've described.

Agree. I don't mind Wines having a VC title but I'm concerned about his fluctuating seasons as well. A new coach will have his own perspective on who is the number one leader, and hopefully their perspective of it will be good ... well, I prefer to say normal.

I am not so sure about Wines he is a non entity to often and simply has no significant impact on any game this season.
