The article says that Tom Mitchell is eligible for this years draft!
Is this true?
I thought he wouldn't be eligible until the following year.
As he is one of the top prospects in his age bracket how will the two new teams and their monopoly on the recruitment of young 'star' players in the next couple of drafts affect our ability to get Mitchell to sydney?

Claremont junior Tom Mitchell, who is ineligible for this year's draft but can be taken by the Sydney Swans under the father-son rule in 2011, stood out with 34 possessions.

oops :p

nevertheless, can someone explain to me how the father/son pick system works and how and if it will change with the introduction of the new teams and the concessions they will get in the upcoming drafts

It's a bidding process, whereby we only have to offer a pick in the same round.

For instance, if we win the Premiership this year and so are left with Pick 16 (actually not because of the incoming team but I can't remember the equivelant).

We only have to bid Pick 16 at the very most and we can get a player who'd go top 5 otherwise.

That's awesome...no one's ever explained it to me that simply before. thanks!

I'm so excited about getting him, our midfield is set for the next decade!

Bidding system.

All teams can bid for him and if a team does we just have to match the Round of the bid, not better the pick. But if no team put in a bid we get him with our last available pick. That's the basic detail of the system.

Gold Coast and Western Sydney can't get him if we norminate him for Father Son.

He will pick the Swans as he will almost certainly be coming to Sydney anyway as the 2011 draft is the GWS draft.

Will he ? If Ablett goes to the Coast, and Geelong feels aggrieved at its deemed compensation, this will be a bigger part than anything Pim Veerbeek has on the go in the shaping of the GWS draft make up.

Supposed to be a super talented kid.

I bloody well hope he picks us. I'm pretty sure the swans have already invested lots of time making us seem as attractive to him as possible. They let him do a few training sessions didn't they?? Can't really remember but they did bring him over to have a look around.

Anyway I'm really excited by the prospect of getting a first-rounder for a cheaper price.

At this stage I would say he is the best player available for the 2011 draft, he is a super inside player. Although things can change.

Swans are very lucky to be getting him, for what looks like a cheap price, comparatively.

Sydney might have to list Mitchell as a Father-Son pick early like Dylan Buckley.

The back page of the Sunday Age's sports sections says Sheedy watched him play live.

GWS can list Mitchell a 17 year old, so the highest bidder might win if he's bound for NSW...

A shame Barry played just 38 games for Carlton. :D

It's great to see Sydney prove Hutchison wrong by turning over their list quickly and not falling away.

Josh Kennedy was a bargain after we traded pick 11 for Mclean.

Thanks for the kind words, though we must all concede that proving Hutchy wrong in a matter related to AFL football is not the most difficult task going around.

Absolute knobhead is that bloke. How someone decided that he should be heard for his opinions on footy is beyond me.

I don't think the GWS can outbid us, if we commit to our first round pick. Doesn't matter if it's pick 16 vs pick 1, we'd still get him.

I hate Hutchy and his kind.

And I have a begrudging respect for Roos and Longmire. :)

By bidding, I meant that GWS could get Mitchell to choose them ahead of Sydney if they sell it to him.

I think he'll choose Sydney because your list is more advanced with the coaching set.

Two players are eligible as father-son selections in 2011 - Dylan Buckley, the son of Jimmy, to Carlton, and Tom Mitchell, son of Barry, to the Swans. I have no doubt both will become elite midfielders.

It's fate...

Can GWS nominate him as a 17yo? I thought they could only pick from the pool of players born Jan-April and I think Mitchell is (was) a May baby. Are the rules different for GWS compared to GC17?

From the AFL site:

From the end of the 2010 season, Team GWS has the right to select up to a dozen 17 year olds born in the January - April window (Jan-April 1993), with the option to relocate to Sydney for the 2011 season. The club also will have the option to trade some of this group to secure experienced AFL players from other clubs, consistent with the rule that applies to the Gold Coast FC.

Tom Mitchell falls oustide this group.

well GWS can still convince Mitchell not to nominate for Father-Son selection.... hence swooping on him in the ND with one of their early picks

but i don't see a reason why anyone would opt to play for GWS instead of the mighty Swans :)

This article is a bit more than a month old but it still is very interesting

TOM MITCHELL HAS THAT STAR QUALITY
http://www.claremontfc.com.au/index...-has-that-star-quality&catid=1:news&Itemid=76

This was Mitchell’s first appearance for Claremont and it left an indelible mark. His gut running, clever positioning, sure kicking with either foot and his deft handpassing made him the standout player in a contest in which the Tigers paid the price for too much poor handling and delivery.

Tom Mitchell, a year 11 student at Hale School, was WA’s best player at the national under-16 championships last year and was rewarded by being chosen in the AIS-AFL Academy squad. He is also a member of the WA squad which will compete in this year’s national under-18 carnival.

Sadly for Claremont fans, Mitchell will be absent for most of the clubs matches in the colts competition this year. As part of his AIS-AFL scholarship he will attend a training camp in Sydney next week before travelling with the group for a tour of South Africa.

Mitchell emerged as the best player on the ground, finishing the contest with three marks, 17 kicks and 19 effective handpasses. As well as those outstanding figures, Mitchell applied eight tackles (easily a team high), gained possession 14 times at stoppages and drove it into his side’s attacking 50m zone five times.
