im not sure who else we will pick but if we get any recycled players from tommorows draft i really think we should take a gamble on ricky mott and dylan smith

Herald Sun, Friday 21st, November

CARLTON will wait on an 11th-hour "second opinion" on Andrew Walker's knee injury before rubber-stamping its No. 2 selection in tomorrow's AFL national draft.

At the request of the AFL, Melbourne's pre-eminent knee surgeon Dr Julian Feller will examine Walker at 5pm today.

His report will be sent to clubs about 6pm.

Walker, 17, who had a standout season with the Bendigo Pioneers in the under-18 TAC Cup competition, will drive to Melbourne today after completing his final Year 11 VCE exam in Echuca.

Walker's knee has become the talking point of the draft.

In layman's terms, he has a floating fragment, possibly bone, that is likely to lead to an operation.

If it is removed, it will be up to six weeks on the sidelines, meaning he will be unable to train until the new year.

If the surgeon decides to graft or knit the damaged area for regrowth, the time prognosis is not known.

The Blues are giving every indication they'll still select the outstanding midfielder with their priority selection.

"All the clubs want to have a second opinion when things aren't clear-cut," Carlton recruiting manager Shane O'Sullivan said yesterday.

"But look at the history of some of these blokes; young (Luke) Ball didn't play, (Luke) Hodge had osteitis pubis in his first year and (Chris) Judd had two shoulders."

The AFL's national talent manager Kevin Sheehan, who has spoken to the Walker family this week, said there was nothing sinister in Feller's examination.

"We are not expecting problems, just getting a second opinion," he said.

"For any young player we'd certainly get the very best opinion and the details will be given to all 16 clubs after the examination.

"We're still confident it's a four-week injury."

Walker, an All-Australian at under-18 level this year, reported soreness after the AFL draft camp in Canberra.

A report from independent AFL medico Dr Tim Wood was forwarded to all clubs last Friday following an appointment with a surgeon.

"Carlton wanted a second opinion and we'll act on any club wanting that," Sheehan said.

He said Walker's family had been very supportive.

"They have been super co-operative, they want to be fair to any club who might draft him," Sheehan said.

"He's a fantastic young fellow that has really taken off in the last four or five months."

Sheehan said positive medical reports on South Australian Josh Willoughby (ankle) and West Australian forward Llane Spaanderman (shoulder) were also sent to clubs this week

We need a Ruckman to support Barnaby, hopefully Marsh or Mott will be available (Either ND or PSD). Pagan has a great track record on recruiting has-beens and troubled players from other clubs and getting the best out of them. and Yeah a solid defender would be even better.

(Eg Sinclair, Grant, Clayton, Rocca, Pike, McCartney, Burton, and not so good Mighty Mick and David Bourke.)
