I put up a rough Top 10 phantom about a month ago to just get the ball rolling. Had the Tiges taking Lalor then, and still think they will. He's too tempting when you have a suite of other insurance picks.

He has the highest ceiling.

Doesn't hurt that Dusty is still so vivid in every black and yellow imagination either.

Just out if interest I did a consensus draft rankings based on most recent ranks from afl.com, rookieme, heraldsun, espn. Paints an interesting picture. Not saying that's how it will go.

There are a few scores that skew the rankings but paints a picture of a clear top 8, then a sub group of 4, then another group from 12-20. So 8,4,8. The 20 is pretty clear.

The top 8 we got no shot at. Our picks probably come from that next group of 12. It sounds like Tauru probably pushes up to top 10 which will push others down.

1. Ashcroft (1,2,3,1) =1.75
2. Smith (3,1,2,1) = 1.75
3. FOS (4,7,3,4) = 4.5
4. Langford (2,4,4,9) = 4.75
5. Lalor (6,6,6,6) = 6
6. Draper (8,9,5,2) = 6
7. Reid (5,3,7,16) = 7.75
8. Smillie (7,8,8,10)= 8.25
9. Lombard (13,10,12,5)= 10
10. Armstrong (9,12,9,11) = 10.25
11. Travaglia (11,14,11,8) = 11
12. Allan (12,4,14,17)= 11.75
13. Trainor (16,15,13,12)= 14
14. Kako (14,13,15,15)= 14.25
15. Lindsay (18,16,17,7)= 14.5
16. Hotton (15,11,17,18)= 15.25
17. Tauru (10,18,10,23) = 15.25
18. Berry (17,17,22,13)= 17.25
19. Shannahan (19,20,16,14)= 17.25
20. Whitlock (20,19,20,20)= 19.75

Well with the recent Bluemour...

What would people prefer going into the late 2020s?

1 - Walker Walsh Cerra Lalor

2 - Walker Walsh Cerra FOS

3 - Walker Walsh Cerra Draper

4 - Walker Walsh Cerra Smith

5 - Walker Walsh Cerra Smillie
Smith or Lalor.

Smith is an absolute ball winning and running machine who could easily follow the same path as some other special talents at the top end like Daicos, Sheezel, McKercher have done in recent years and start off as a high half back

Lalor could develop over time into that Petracca type high level dynamic midfielder. He’d spend longer developing than the other high picks. He’ll spend time in the reserves, spend time injured from collisions and he’ll spend most of his first four years at half forward but he could potentially be one of those dominant powerful midfielders that most premiership teams need.

I like Draper but his disposal concerns me. Also has no left foot.

Jagga Smith would instantly make us quicker inside to out.

Lalor I just don’t think it’s worth the risk. No tank and hasn’t shown enough.

FOS feels like he has almost taken it easy this season. Watch some of his early games in the Coats league and he’s incredible. Maybe Walshy has been in his ear lol.

Pick 3 - Smith, FOS or Draper

I’m just a watcher of the highlights, where most look great… any reason Langford not in the conversation at 3 should we get it. Looks just as good as any of the other names.

Me thinking about the TDK, Draper, Walker and Walsh on-ball brigade

If we get pick 3, here's my order of preference:
1. Draper - pure x-factor and leadership. Fits exactly what we need while also being the best player in the draft. If he played for Oakleigh and Vic Metro he would be comfortably in the conversation for pick 1.
2. Smith - probably the safest option but not quite as explosive as Draper. I'd still be ecstatic if we call his name though I think the Tigers will take him at 1.
3. Lalor - Massive upside, plays with the ferocity that I think we need ... however, soft tissue injuries already and I worry about getting sucked into the Martin/Heeney potential. Do we really think that he is certain to get there?
4. O'Sullivan - similar to Smith I think FOS is a safer pick than Draper. Concerned about the low possession numbers.

Players I would be unhappy about if we select them:
Smillie - nothing against him, he's just too similar to what we already have too much of.
Reid - not sold on him at all. Lacks speed and size. No guarantee that will improve and I question if he will be able to dominate at afl level without improving those aspects.
Langford - again, lacks speed. Bit of a theme in this list.

If we trade up to 3 I'd be very happy with Draper.
If we kept current picks I'd like Hannaford and Berry I think.
Hard to know which of those iterations would be most fruitful for us.

Think we are still contending in 3 years time relatively comfortably so it's an interesting decision here.

Draper - Blistering acceleration, fantastic defensively and tough as anyone in the draft. Good-above average user which is his area to improve at the next level to become a genuine star player. Is a little bit light of frame too so his contest work may suffer against AFL bodies for a few years while he builds his strength.
- Plays like Luke Shuey.

Lalor - Powerful, classy and arguably the most damaging player in the draft. Highly injury prone and is coming off a major hamstring tear to finish his year after missing most of the year with other soft tissue injuries. I have no doubt he'll be a gun at the next level if his body holds up.
- Plays like Degoey

Smith - The best clearance player in the draft. Skinny but extremely nimble and hard to lay a glove on in traffic. Thrives being the number 1 option at stoppages but is mediocre by foot and lacks penetration. Probably the worst pick of the lot for us imo purely due to Cripps role in the team getting in the way of his number 1 strength. Terrible defensively.
- Plays like Daicos without the kicking talent.

O'Sullivan - Long touted as the 'best' prospect in the draft due to his fantastic underage year but has shown 0 progression this season. Dealt a tough hand with a finger and thumb injury that kept him out most of the year but struggled to really show more than a few glimpses through his whole season. Imo he doesn't have any defining traits but he uses the ball well, is a good runner, good agility and a good leap without being truly elite at anything.
- Plays like Josh Kelly but not a great comparison.

If we're trading up and it's not for Draper or Lalor I'm not doing the trade

Given it's pick 3 and not pick 2, we can't guarantee that - so it would be a draft night only proposition. But WC unlikely to go for that. If they trade down, it's to get a pick for the Baker trade.

I'd also trade up for Jagga. The one thing you forgot to mention about his game is his consistency. He may not damage you with his efficiency and penetration, but he doesn't need to. It'll be death by a thousand cuts, or in this case 30+ week in week out.

He's also very quick and agile similar to that of Daicos or Butters.

Clear number 1 player in the draft for me. Hence why I think he won't even get to our hypothetical pick 3.

Yeah im still not that excited about this years top end players overall, i think your description of the above players are pretty accurate and along the lines of what i think as well…

I’m more excited about keeping our current picks which are in a good spot to pickup a couple of talented players which our list needs…

He's very consistent but next to Cripps I think his output would be severely hampered. His 1 wood is clearances. He's not getting priority on them over Cripps for at least the next few years.

Draper or Lalor for me or stick to 12+14

He may start at HB similar to Daicos and Sheezel. But ultimately he could be a 10 year midfielder for whoever picks him including us.
