of course it's subjective but IMO these are locks:

Leonardo Da Vinci
Michaelangelo
Rembrandt
Picasso
Vincent Van Gogh

Close:

Caravaggio
Dali
Monet
Gauguin
Cezanne

I would have

Renoir
Picasso
Rembrandt
Van Gogh
Monet
Holbein
Turner
as definites...

Was Leonardo a prolific painter? didn't he spend a lot of time on inventions and studying the human body etc... the mona lisa is great, but you have to consider how prolific they were. I don't think he had an extensive range of paintings, so I didn't include him on my list.

Bosch - would get a vote from me too
Picasso
Gaugain

I know its 11 but.. well I choose 11. all revolutionary way before their time types. all profoundly influenced their contemporaries and really thought outside the box.

Great thread too :thumbsu:

No one has any love for Goya?

Surely Goyas 'Black paintings' were revolutionary and incredibly influential to modern art

I baulk at Warhol. Inflential, yes.

yeah Goya's thereabouts surely

What I find interesting is the (blurry) line of distinction between the most expensive painting in the world...and then priceless ..who owns museums anyway?

Here are a couple of the most expensive paintings in the world I believe, worth like 150m US
