No Hodge, what planet are you from.

Hodge ahead of Franklin? And Pav for that matter?

Fev better than Pav? ...and Cox, and Scarlett, and Brown, and Riewoldt?

Pav better than Pav???

Bock? Where did all the love for Bock come from? AA CHB doesn't guarantee you that surely? Egan was not considered top 20 in 2007 despite beating just about every CHF that year.
Hodge got the Hawks over the line in the finals series... Can play anywhere on the ground so yes ahead of Franklin and Pavlich

Freo's list is only going to get worse this year so im not expecting Pav to get any better than last year

Fev kicked 99 goals last year as a lone forward. pretty tough gig i would have thought so yes above Pav.

Bock is the 2nd best defender in the competition. so yes definately in the top 20.

i see a few people have Bock in there. He is lucky to be top40. And someone has marc murphy. LOL. and a collingwood supporter at that.

Some people smoke too much crack!

Top 20 for the year? I'll take a stab, trying to stay away from just the usual suspects, but it's hard to do that.

1. Ablett
2. Franklin
3. Deledio
4. Hodge
5. Riewoldt
6. Judd
7. Pavlich
8. B.Harvey
9. Selwood
10. S.Burgoyne
11. Cox
12. Kerr
13. Scarlett
14. Bartel
15. Pendlebury
16. Scarlett
17. M.Murphy
18. Bock
19. Didak
20. Goddard

Something different.

Something different indeed?!

You have Scarlett in twice by the way. Leave him at 13 I reckon.

You reckon Deledio will break out that much? I wouldn't put it past him.

1. Ablett
2. Judd
3. Pavlich
4. Hodge
5. Franklin
6. Cox
7. Riewoldt
8. Bartel
9. J Brown
10. Fevola
11. Scarlett
12. Cross
13. Kerr
14. Corey
15. C.Cornes
16. Richardson
17. Harvey
18. Black
19. Mitchell
20. Goodes

Judd could go back to #1 with a full pre-season but at this stage Ablett has him. Hodge and Franklin would be pretty close but i think Hodge has all the strings to his bow. Riewoldt, Brown and Fev all hard to separate but Pav is a standout with Franklin in the key forward department.

Fev better than Pav? ...and Cox, and Scarlett, and Brown, and Riewoldt?

Fevola was only a few goals away from taking the Coleman. Why exactly is he under Brown? He's had a better year than Brown and Riewoldt as a forward, hell, probably even Pavlich too even though I think Pavlich is a better player than him.

He will most likely have more opportunities to kick for goal this year.

I reckon Fev is a bit high also. Franklin would kick 150 goals with the amount of ball Fev gets.

You also have to take into consideration the quality of delivery, and the quality of the actual team. Fevola kicked 99, the 2nd most dominant forward in the competition last year... in a middle of the road side where a lot of the time the midfield would get beaten.

How much ball does Franklin get compared to Fevola? The amount of scoring shots he has, and the amount of times the Hawks get it up there, suggests to me that it could be similar. The major difference you might be neglecting here is that the Hawks have other dangerous targets, but we do not. I think Fevola gets a lot more attention based on that very fact alone, so for him to kick 99 despite being our only target is still quite remarkable.

Good list Beckers.

My only serious query would be Cross at 13... but I reckon that's your creative license eh.

Yeah I suppose not all of the copius ball Fev gets delivered is quality. But he still gets a lot, and comprises the vast majority of Carlton's scoring. Whereas Buddy concedes a lot to Roughead, who kicked 70 odd himself. In short, when the ball goes forward for Carlton, it goes to Fev 9 times out of 10.

Basically, the other guy had Fev at 5. I reckon there are more than 4 players better than him in the league.

Amazing, a lot of people here dont have Adam Goodes in their respective top 20 but in actual fact he is easily in the top 5 players running around in the competition. If all players were to, hypethetically, play at there best, he is head and shoulders above players like Hodge, Harvey, Black, Cooney and other midfielders. Throw him in the ruck and he can not only compete with but also beat Cox, Hille, Sandilands and co. Maybe not in actual ruckwork where he would be more than competitive but around the ground stuff(whilst playing in the ruck), he would run rings around these other ruckmen. Also lets not mention that he can go up forward and kick a bag as well. The only position he hasent yet mastered is as a defender, but I cant begin to tell you how many times I have seen him go down back and take a contested mark in the last line of defense. Geez, the stupidity of some people on here is astounding. I know secretely a lot of supporters of opposition sides would love to have Adam Goodes playing for their teams.
Hodge can play forward, back or on ball the only position he cannot play is in the Ruck. Also how many years has it been since Goodsey has played in the ruck.Hodge is no.1

12. N.Reiwoldt
13. J.Corey
14. B.Harvey
15. J.Selwood
16. D.Cox
17. J.Brown

unlucky

J. Brown
Roughead
Richo
Mclean
Didak
Griffen
R Murphy
Sewell
Foley
Goddard

This ended up being really hard, any of the players in my unlucky section could easily fit into any spot between 10-20. and Delidio should be higher but i can't be bothered changing the order again for now

But you could make the argument that if Fevola had a decent forward next to him, it would free him up a lot more and he'd find it easier to get into positions that he doesn't have the luxury of doing at the moment because everything is concentrated on him.

Lone forwards have it harder because all the pressure is on them to kick the goals, while all the opposition's focus is on them. At least with Franklin/Roughead, it is spread out. I think it is a little too simplistic to suggest that Buddy concedes a lot of goals to him when it could very much hamper his goal scoring if he were the only target.

Basically, the other guy had Fev at 5. I reckon there are more than 4 players better than him in the league.

I agree, but I reckon Fev deserves to be in the top 10. Give him a few more goals and the Coleman, and suddenly he'd be in the top 5... instead in the bottom half of the 20. There doesn't seem to be much of a huge gap, considering a few goals might make the difference for some lists. Personally, I'd rate the player by how much influence he has on the entire season, rather than just stats. Stats are only important when the gap is large, with a few exceptions (eg. 15 quality, game changing disposal instead of 30 cheapies).

Assuming a bit of predictive license, which players constitute the best 20 in the league heading into the 2009 season? Obviously there will be the reigning heavyweights, like Ablett and Buddy, but there will also be other guns who might have had a good preseason for a change (e.g Judd), or some young stars ready to go beserk (Deledio, Selwood etc). Please keep the predictive aspect of your list fairly realistic.

1. Ablett
2. Judd
3. Franklin
4. Pav
5. Cox
6. Riewoldt
7. Hodge
8. Brown
9. Scarlett
10. Bartel

19. Chapman
20. Hille

Have a go.
Your a joke McLeod is a better player than Chapman and Hille put together.Fevola lost more games last year with his attitude than he won and reminder Scarlett is just a stopper that is why he is so cheap on Dream Team and Supercoach.

Every opposition supporter with a brain would want Goodes playing for their team as you pointed out he is in the top5 players in the league. I think the reason a lot of people leave him out is because he is not liked at all by opposition supporters as he gets a free ride from tribunal, video ref, umpires and in the Brownlow count (See last year where he polled votes for 10 posession games where his own coach said he played poorly)
