Toast Top 5 BRISBANE Lions (IYO?)

there won't be much to talk about here for the next month or two so why not discuss this? i think its an interesting question considering how many great players we have had in the (relatively) brief merged clubs existence. dont remember the 01-04 team as well as others here so im interested to hear how some of the greats there compare to some of our modern champions. would love to see explanations / discussion behind rankings if possible =).

criteria:
1. i intended for this to be a mens discussion but if you feel an aflw player should be included go nuts
2. played more games for the brisbane lions than either of the bears or fitzroy (if they played for either)

for me:

5. Dayne Zorko - 5x B&F winner that came very close to winning another in a premiership year. took the captaincy and oversaw the clubs return to being a relevant team. hes still underrated (and denigrated) by opposition supporters, but i think even our own undervalue how good zorko has been for so long.

4. Jason Akermanis - probably the most talented lion ever. extreme personality but many of the things i saw him do as a kid have not been replicated by players since, brisbane or otherwise.

3. Simon Black - my favourite growing up. probably gets a bit undersold in great midfielder conversations for spending so much of his prime in a middling to below average side, but his vision and foot skills really set him apart from other inside mids.

2. Lachie Neale - might have hands better than black. arguably the best stoppage work of any other modern player with his ability to win the contested ball, work through traffic and feed it to his teammates advantage. incredible player who will hopefully continue to add to his all time CV

1. Michael Voss - the boring but obvious answer for #1 id be more interested in seeing someone be able to argue for someone else being the best lion ever.

I think you have the top three right and in the right order. However I would have to think abit longer to get the next two, no disrespect to Aker and Zorko.

1. Michael Voss

2. Simon Black

3. Lachie Neale

4. Jason Akermanis

5. Jonathan Brown

Black > Neale purely because he played his whole career with us, and won 3 flags. I think that one is pretty close. I went Aker next given his skill, but he's definitely not my favourite person.

Browny was a tougher inclusion than I expected. Hurts that his peak was when we sucked, and we lost some years due to injury. Still such a shame when he got OP in 2006 midway through the year and he was leading the brownlow at the time.

Zorko wasn't really a consideration for me, I'd have him more around 8-10. Lappin would have been 6, and I think Harris is a shot to move up from 7 into the top 5 if he continues stacking excellent seasons and we pinch another flag.

On Talent
5. W Ashcroft
4. Neale
3. Aker
2. Black
1. Voss

Old Faves
5. Brown
4. Pike
3. Daniher
2. Johnson
1. Lynchy

Current Faves
5. Payne
4. Andrews
3. Hipwood
2. Cameron
1. McCarthy

Plus oh so many of the others that could on the lists .... 5 not enough.

1. Voss. Some compare him with Buckley and Hird because they played in the same era. Voss was the best of the 3.

2. Neale. Plays at such a consistently high level. Clean hands, as good as I have seen.

3. Andrews. One of the best internet defenders there has been. Reads the flight so very well. If the AA selectors actually watched every game he would be 5 time AA (the most discussed omission from this years team).

4. Brown. Strong and courageous running back with the flight. His mark in 2001 v Hawks arguably was the moment that turned the year around IMO.

5. Black. Clean hands and exceptional disposal by hand and foot. Silky.

~ Aker very close 6th.
~ Wash could very well be in this group in 10 year’s time.

Also agree Voss, Neale, Black, Akker, Brown in that order.

6-15 is more fun.

They spoke on the Roar deal about Mcclugage, Rayner, Berry and Andrews all likely becoming 300 gamers for the club so they'll be in the mix one day😍😍

If I were to give it a go...
6. Zorko
7. Lappin
8. Power
9. Andrews (will end higher)
10. Johnson
11. Lynch
12. Leppa
13. Charlie Cameron
14. Rich
15. Chris Scott?

Unlucky - Joey, Rockliff, Beams (played some great footy for us but not enough), Mcclugage, Mcrae, Bradshaw, McGrath, Adcock, Martin.

Seeing Ben decided he wanted out when we really needed him I'm replacing him with Joe. Joe has been my fav. to watch the most often times good and the occasionally weird.

How about when Joe took a mark just before half time against port in round 1 2022 then played on as the siren went. What a character.

1. Voss
2. Neale
3. Brown
4. Black
5. Zorko

So many on the cusp. Leppa changed the way CHB was played. Andrews could squeeze in there. Wouldn't be surprised to see the Ashcroft boys make the list.

No love for Tom Collier or Todd Banfield? Sad.
Todd was going to like this but fumbled his phone as he went to pick it up.
