Ultimately, if the kid becomes the next Buddy, Riewoldt or Kennedy, the trade would be worth it. But since no KPF who has been drafted for 15 years has risen to that level yet, I wouldn't do it. To me, it seems like we'd be investing a lot on a very long shot.
I don't have much faith in our recruiters. From memory, the last decent key forward we drafted was Nuts Coventry.

According to Twomey today on the AFL Road to The Draft, he still has no idea who Adelaide will take. He said Hollands,. McDonald & Thilthorpe are in the mix. Not sure where you get the confidence re McDonald.
The other factor is if Thilthorpe is in the mix for pick 1, why is this board so sure that McDonald is miles above.

Look, I agree. I'm no underage watcher at all so I have to rely on others. But the talks of trading away so much for an 18yo kids scares me, when so many of them have been disappointments.

Club wants to do it as they think that will get Fans and Members and Media off there Back after shocking Trade Period

That might be the case Dave, but I'm not sure if its the right thing to do. That kid will effectively cost us Adam Treloar, Jaidyn Stephenson, pick 39 and 2 first round picks (I think). Its a shitload to give up for an untried kid.

Thilthorpe is in the mix because he’s an Adelaide local and fills a need. There’s a lot of nervousness around McDonald, with clubs convinced that the two WA clubs will come super hard for him after 2 years, which is the last thing a team on the rebuild needs.
That’s not to take anything away from Thilthorpe. He’s still a jet, super athletic 200cm type. Could easily end up being the best tall of the draft, he has all the tools, it’s just that McDonald out performed him this year.
Rendell seems convinced the Crows go for Thilthorpe, and you’d think he probably still has some contacts at Adelaide. Probably the only club outside WA that would be confident of warding off a poaching attempt from WA for McDonald would be Collingwood, given he’s publicly stated that it’s his dream to play for the pies.

I’d rather get a key forward first.
I think a couple of pacy small forwards who get to the ball drop will make more of a difference than a kpf. Tom Lynch was on par with Mason Cox in the back end of the year, but it didn't matter becasue Tiges hit ground balls and keep the ball alive and the threat real.

Lynch might have statistically been on par, but his presence was night and day. He crashed packs and made defenders shit their pants every time a high ball came in. The effectiveness they had compared to each other was night and day, even if the numbers say differently.

Might get slammed for this. I agree he’s not a need, but elite in the important areas for a defender.

He could release Maynard, Crisp or Quaynor into the midfield.

If he comes cheap, I’d be keen.

Would rather back in Murphy or Bianco.

I can't say I saw what you did.

One of the slowest lists in the comp and we just got rid of 3 of our quickest players.

Any DFA's have speed? Could use some of that...

I'm not sure he's right for us. I'm happy with our running/mid size defenders, but I was surprised that North delisted him. No superstar but pretty handy.

People who run the club don't have much clue to start with

Macredie is one Id take. Over McDonald. He just couldn't get a gig over Jones, Weitering ect.

Nice height but a little light on still.

Back issues for a young player close to 2m tall are a bit of a worry and he appears to have been a bit vanilla even at VFL level, although the 2017 highlights video I just watched showed something promising here and there.

We'd be gambling on him being untapped talent instead of a player who doesn't really have much impact out on the ground. Not sure if we should be looking at DFA's who don't look like a good chance of being in our next 6-8 players waiting outside our best 22 (if not pushing for best 22), as that's as low as I'd go on a DFA and even then I'd have to think about it for a while.

So it's 44 players including cat B rookies.

I count we currently have 37 plays, including 3 cat B rookies. So can take 7 players in the off-season. I'd say 5 in the draft and 2 delisted FA

You can only have two Cat B rookies, so one of Tohill or Keane is Cat A (side note: did we ever figure out which one was which?).

We don't have to go in with the full 44 players and, given the state of our cap and how heavy our top end contracts still are (despite clearing 1.5 mil+ of salary net for next year), I'd guess we wont be going in with a full list of 44 next year.

would be interested in having some flexibility for whatever form the mid-season drafts takes next year. nothing confirmed but i read an article on a mooted nomination type deal at three different periods during the season but they haven't officially announced it i don't think. anyway, i reckon there might be some kids who go undrafted who run around as 19 years olds and jump out of the blocks, i reckon we'd want a piece of that.

Because he has gotten the job done even against mature bodied players at WAFL level?

Thilthope looks like a talent, but he's a bit of a "tweener" who isn't as dominant as a deep forward and has a good chunk of his perceived value tied up in his mobility and agility further up the ground. His groin niggles across a more extended period may also be a bit of a concern for someone who is 2m+ tall.

Not saying he is bad by any means and we'd take him in a heart beat if he slid to us, but McDonald looks like the more bankable prospect as a forward.

They've talked about replenishing the list and clearing the slate in one fell swoop in order to have more recruiting flexibility. I'm hoping that means having the full list quota as we search for additional talent for the next crack.
