It's a strange one. Supposedly, he was on 6, we're paying 3 of it this year and then the rest of his Hawks contract is for 3. So we're only saving 3 this year and for future years. When you hear salaries being bandied around, surely Phillips is worth $300,000 a year? It doesn't sound like there was any real cap saving from shipping him out.

Pretty sure with us he was on 600k for next 2 years (2021 and 2022).

When he went Hawks they extended it by a year so they pay 3 x 300k and made us give him 300k for 2021.

So 600k saved year 2 and 300k this season.

Phillips was out of contract at the end of 2021 so he only had 1 more year left with us, not two

Melb are genuine flag team with the current list, with players like weideman, brown not even playing atm..... Sadly he is no chance of leaving.
Who knows these days. Less loyalty (barring Treloar). Think Buddy was closer to another flag with Hawks than Swans when he went there. Albeit free agent? Think Petracca is a year away from free agency?

Gee Paul seedsman type would be handy...

I wouldn't of thought a whole lot cap wise given his standing in the game currently.
starved of opportunities there. And I can’t imagine Melb have any cap space, especially considering they will need over 1mill for petracca. I’m just looking at decent forwards and realistically available. Weideman is one, though picks not salary could be our issue. McKay ooc as well but he’s worth a lot more in $ and trade value . king is OOC with suns next year, we could have a war chest to get him to Melb. Riccardi could come cheapish, though he’s not setting world on fire this year he played well last season. With hogan, finlayson and himmelburg he might also be gettable.

for mine weid/Riccardi are both options or we offer King big dollars next year

As we speak Thilthorpe kicks his 5th on debut with 11 mins left in the 3rd quarter.

His lead up in sanfl he had 10, 12 and 11 disposal games yet they took a punt and promoted him.

Being genuinely in the hunt doesn't mean too much to a significant number of players. Big money offers can persuade anyone

So the question has to be; should we trade De Goey if we can get an early-ish first rounder?

I think we should. With the money we save, we front end Grundy’s deal and develop as many talented kids as we can. Later in Grundy’s deal we can chase FAs as we rise back up and become a destination club again.

Pendlebury, Howe, Sidebottom and Roughead have very little trade value and are better retained to help develop the kids.

Adams, Moore, Grundy, Crisp will still be around for the next time we contend, if we play our cards right.

Cox, Mayne, Greenwood, Madgen, Thomas... thanks for the memories.
