My goodness how critical it would have been having a top 2 pick - plus others which may have essentially allowed us to get Daicos + another 5-9 selection.

Sickening to think about what we have potentially done.

The club won't change if people keep making excuses for these terrible decisions.

Why don't we have a first round pick this year who did we trade it to? Can't find any reference to it through my searching.

So frustrating. If we finish 17th and kept it, would we have had pick 1 (FS Daicos) and pick 3?
Well yes and no. The pick would still have to be used for daicos, the debate is simply that we could have for more for pick 2 during trade night, than two picks in the 20’s. GWS have won and blind Freddy saw us dropping down, I had us at 13th. We got poulter who looks good, and McMahon etc, time will tell

Landing Nick Daicos next year looks like going 1 or 2, yeah it may have been nice to get another in the top 10 or traded for some more later 1st round picks but that's not happening. Let's hope hindsight is a beautiful thing and the talent we got this year rewards us.

We are due for some good luck in this area when you look back at all the disasters we've had.

They never thought we would fall this far in a short amount of time. Prob thought the pick would end up being 11-13

Well honestly they are idiots.

Teams around us were making improvements or had young kids and free agents coming in all while we traded out 3 best 22 players with no real talented kids coming in..

They need to all be sacked because the writing was on the wall.

Reckon JDG would love the Gold Coast lifestyle. Trade JDG, Sidebottom & 2nd rounder for King IF no rapid improved consistency in Jordy’s game by then.

They won't Trade King

Steele and Pendles are not going to be part of our next Contending Team so would Trading them while they have Currency might be worth looking at.

Problem any Trade for Picks this year will be Eaten Up by the Nick Daicos Bid

I think they would have considered a chance but took the risk. It was essentially futures trading but my biggest complaint is even getting the picks that turned into Poulter and McMahon wasn’t a particularly good deal even when giving up pick 11-13.

I would be trading Grundy to Port and praying they are close enough to a flag to throw something crazy at us.

JDG has 15 weeks to sort himself out, if he can't let him go, time to shine young man, you want all the fancy expensive toys time to earn them.

Sidebottom and Pendles don't go anywhere, play out the remainder of there careers in B&W, no one is giving anything decent for them at that age.

We need Pendles to teach the new draftees. Get rid of our role models and we will be like Melbourne when they got rid of James Mcdonald and the rest of their leaders.

Trading Pendles would be about as bad for our image as possible, not to mention bad in terms of all the knowledge he can impart on our youth. Moreover, he's still our best mid!

A month ago I wouldn't have thought about moving Steele, but he looks bloody disinterested. Hasn't checked back in since his off-field stuff up last year. I'd rather trade De Goey than either of them though.
EDIT: oh yeah, would also boot Cox off too to a team in need.

If we had pick 2 or 3 from our ladder position then it’s quite likely it would have been used on Daicos if he goes number 1 as everyone is currently predicting as if we had say pick 2 when he was bid we would have had to use it under the F/S and academy rules. Essentially our 1st this year recruited Poulter, McMahon and possibly McCreery (we were so active last year I lost track but I think one of those pick 20s got traded (possibly with something else) to get two later draft picks which directly or indirectly turned into McCreery and McMahon). Having said that, as others have said I don’t think the club expected us to fall away this much. That’s the interesting thing about trading for future picks, clubs are gambling in how they or an opposition club may go in the next season.

The Nick Daicos situation also crates a tricky situation if we were to decide to go into a full rebuild and trade players for good draft picks. Because we are obligated to use the next pick (or picks) to match for Daicos that’s where they go (unless we can pry the number 1 draft pick out of whoever has got it). On the other hand if we finish low this year, on draft night once we have matched for Nick (assuming we don’t go into deficit), we might be able to trade our future first for a high round 1 if clubs are willing to bet we would struggle again next year. If we want to trade players for picks this year and do a full rebuild, the smart thing would be to trade for future firsts and try to trade back in this year after we land Nick. Worst case scenario if we can’t we go into next year’s draft/trade period with a strong draft hand even if we get a quick bounce

I would have preferred us to have held this years 1st and traded it, perhaps for a highly rated player, perhaps for a 2022 1st rounder in this years trade/draft period. Would have netted a better return than what we got.

As good as they are, given their age I don’t think they have the trade currency they used to. If they were to move on, it would be more likely Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis type deals.

In hindsight I would agree with you and at the moment I‘m betting so would the club. But that’s the gamble clubs are taking when they deal with future draft picks, trading them in or out. I just don’t think the club thought we’d actually fall off the cliff and to be fair neither did the rest of the industry. Most people thought we’d be middle of the road with a pick in the early teens for which Poulter, McMahon and McCreery with a years development would have been a decent deal. As things stand right now , it’s not looking so shrewd. But either way it’s done and there isn’t anything we can do about other than look at what we can do with our list and How to get maximum benefit with what we do have and what we can now control.

I think you make a really good point with Grundy and Port Adelaide. They would probably believe that he would be the last piece in the puzzle to secure a flag. As much as I would love to keep him, we could get some real talent with his salary and would get some nice picks on top. We are in no position to maintain the likes of Grundy and would probably go places faster without him. Having said that, I don't believe we would trade him and i'm fine with that.
