He was vital in the Semi (even though he was gifted one or two goals) but his output wasn’t great in the other finals. However I do agree that because of his danger, speed and strength, he took a key defender away from other players which helped everyone perform.I do think Stringer was more important to the premiership than he got credit for though Pann. Our mids/general structure make it hard for our forwards to score sometimes and there have been a number of games where flashy goals out of nowhere have been very important in helping us lift and get over the line. My concern is that without him there is very little in the way of spark in that forward line.
I certainly hope I'm wrong, but I look at a potential forward six next year and shudder.
Our midfield is our whole game - the pressure it puts on around the ball gives the mids space to get the ball in to the forwards so it can be locked in.
Its pressure also protects our defenders; high balls under pressure we’re eaten up by our defensive backs for 2 years, but no pressure at the source this year resulted in our backs looking all at sea. Our personnel at either end are important, but not nearly as important as our personnel through the middle.
Bringing in players is obviously important to improve the squad, but improving the application, effort and mindset of our midfield and, by extension, the playing group, is 10 times more important.
Make no mistake, we are a premiership threat every year providing we maintain the rage we saw last year.
